Excellent Small Informative Museum
Nov 2019
A really well put together museum which will give you some historical perspective about Crete. It was a good precursor to our visit to the Palace of Knossos and several other historical explorations that we took in while on Crete. Worth the time and low cost.

Tucked away but worth seeking out
Sep 2019
This small collection is housed in a deconsecrated church in a street above the west side of the harbour. The icons and frescoes of religious subjects are completely at home here, and are intermingled with finds such as coins, pottery and inscriptions that give a clue to the area's busy past. items from the collections of private citizens are included with 'finds' from official excavations. The building itself is also of interest, being cosy, rather than overwhelming.

Tiny but interesting

I had a little extra time while walking down Theotokopoulou Street, when this little museum caught my attention. You can see everything in there in 15 minutes, but it's worth the effort if you are in the area.

Small but beautiful
May 2019
We went to Chania on 18MAY2019, mostly to see the maritime museum but, despite it being International Museum Day with free entrance in many places, it was shut. We ended up at this little museum which was open and offering free access for the day. The (mostly religious) art on display is beautiful and reminds the visitor of Crete's long and much disputed past. Well worth a visit.

Snall & beautiful

The museum is rather small, but it's actually very interesting - good for explaining the history of Crete and Chania. The items on display were very interesting and the paintings were is surprisingly good condition - the paint was often healthier than the wood. Despite its small size, it's well worth a visit.

Small museum with some nice art

A very small collection of artworks from the Byzantine era

Well presented and atmospheric as it is in an old chapel

Worth visiting if you have the Multi museum ticket that covers this and several other local museums

Art from another era
Mar 2017 • Friends
Next to the Firka fortress, keep walking around for 3oo m approximately to the Byzantine museum. It a small museum well presented filled with art of another era. You can see art spanning for 1000 years. This is a different point of view of Hellenic art alongside the Archaic art, the Classical art, and the Hellenistic art.
Well worth the visit.

The history of Crete in half an hour
Sep 2017 • Couples
Chania has som good museums , perfect for the person who 'doesn't do museums' - small and compact - or for the person who is genuinely interested in Minoan or Byzantine culture. The Byzantine museum just up from the far end of the harbour is small, well set out, informative - and in addition (like the municipal museum) - situated in a delightful old building that used to be a church. Two thousand years of histor in half an hour: Perfect!

small but interesting collection
Sep 2016 • Friends
This is a very small collection of art and mosaics. It is worth a short visit when in Chania. It is slightly challenging to find as it is in a small building behind the fortress so watch carefully for the signs.
