A hidden gem in the heart of Chania. The folklore museum felt like stepping into another world full of rich history and forgotten arts. The house is 2 floors and is covered, from floor to ceiling with artifacts and textiles from Crete. The first room is a traditional old-fashioned Cretan bedroom, followed by a room filled with landscapes and agricultural tools and lastly a room set up as a traditional kitchen and dining area. When you walk back downstairs, the lady running the museum has her workshop on display filled with amazing hand stitched textiles of landscapes and people. Her work is beautiful! We bought some pieces while we were there. As you leave the house, you see a traditional wine press. Amazing tour for only 3Euros.

Small, with tiny rooms evoking a long vanished era, this museum has been crafted with love - and you may well meet the lady whose inspiration has led to this delightful place. A treat - you can visit in about 20 - 30 minutes. Children find it fascinating. It's by the Catholic Church with the entrance in the lovely St. Francis courtyard. Near the main museum of antiquities.

This is an old house which has been set up to show what an "agricultural house" would have looked like. There is also an embroidery display/exhibit. The only problem is there is limited signage in any language other than Greek and the staff only speak Greek.

Very small, not many artifacts, no tour, not much to expect. At least the cost is only 2 euros, but still not worth it.. I believe the owner keeps this just to promote and sponsor her embroidery work.
I didn't feel very welcome there and the only contact we had was when the owner came to collect the entrance fee.

Not easy to find, but worth to visit. You can see living conditions and culture of cretans just for 2 euro per person.

There were some nice examples of cretan embroidery with no explanation. Mostly, however, the space was full of handicrafts for sale. Some of the items were nice but that wasn't what I was looking for.

A lot if stuff, some of it not presented in the best way. However there are items there to be delved into if you give it the time. The embroideries done on the premises are all individually done and there is a lot of talent involved. Go through the entrance to the Catholic Church and take the stone steps on your left to get to the museum. €2 a head.

We enjoyed our visit to this nice little museum, but it does have a rather 'homemade' feel in places. The original Cretan items are interesting enough, and there are plenty of them to see. The overall effect is somewhat let down by the homemade figures portraying locals in the scenes, and the backgrounds are rather unconvincing. Having said that it all has a great deal of charm, and has clearly been lovingly put together by some rather nice local women, who are seen working inside the museum making local craft items. Don't be put off, it is worth a visit!

A small eclectic collection showing living conditions and artefacts from years gone by.

The museum seems to be the private collection of two ladies, who are on hand to answer questions.

There is no widespread advertising but it is located off the entrance to the Catholic Church, opposite the Cathedral, on the main street through the old town going down to the harbour.

€2 per person well spent!
