About
Welcome to the Captain Nick experience, No.1 boat trip in Chania. He is the only owner Captain in the harbor - the perfect condition of his boat, his safety record, knowledge and experience of the waters around Chania are unsurpassed. Captain Nick deeply cares about the environment he works in and is well known as Chania’s octopus expert. He has an unmatched ability to seek out octopus and other sea life. Your time and enjoyment are what drive him – with a passion and enthusiasm for the sea that’s contagious! With 22 years experience in Chania harbor, you really couldn’t be in safer hands. We offer 1 hour, 2.5 hour (low season) or 3.5 hour trips and private tours. The maximum we like to take is around 36 (depending on the children to adult ratio) which allows us to give a personal service and to take care of individual needs. Please book your trip as well in advance as possible to ensure your place.

Fab trip at a reasonable price. We did the 3.5 hour afternoon cruise for €25 - the trip is relaxed & intimate. The trip is made by Nick’s clear passion for the job and desire to ensure his customers have a great day.
Highly recommended!

We went in the 3.5 hour tour and saw Crete mountain goats, went to a lovely secluded beach and snorkelled too. Nick and crew were friendly and professional and I was even allowed to drive the boat (supervised of course). Would recommebdz especially as Nick's tour starts before the other glass bottom boat tours so you leave before the other tourists arrive.

My wife and I went on the one hour boat trip on our last day in Chania’s Old Town Harbor. Nick spoke perfect English and was very accommodating on the way out to the smaller island. Once the boat stopped, my wife and I jumped into the water to snorkel and look at all the pretty fish. Then she lost her wedding band ($2500 USD). We told Nick and he sprang into action. After only a few minutes of searching, he did the impossible. He found her wedding band!! We were so overjoyed!

Regardless of whether or not he would have found the ring, the fact that he was even willing to look touched both of us so deeply.

Thank you for the memories, and for going above and beyond for my wife and myself!

This is my 8th visit to Chania. On my first visit I gave this a go. A fantastic experience. So I gave it another go this year. Captain Nick recognised me and made me feel more like a friend than a customer. So professional and funny. No doubt I'll go again next year. Thoroughly recommend this boat trip experience.

The trip was beautiful and relaxed, staff was friendly. However the captain insisted to show us an octopus to take pictures with and broke 0.5 meter of coral and rocks to get out the animal and poked it with a screwdriver to lure it out of its shelter. Then it was put into a bucket for everybody to hold it and take selfies. Very poor example for the tourists on how to treat nature.

Eva this page is for reviews for our trip, not a forum for creative writing. Your review is full of fiction and very little fact! You went on a guided snorkel to seek out octopus (you knew what you were going for). Where does the word 'insisted' come into it. He showed you an octopus, it was your free choice to look or not - there was no insisting about it! THERE IS NO CORAL OUT AT LAZARETTA ISLAND - therefore how could it possibly have been destroyed? You even provide a measurement of the fictional destruction! The screwdriver was used to enlarge the hole the octopus was in - THE SCREWDRIVER DID NOT TOUCH THE OCTOPUS. It is beyond my understanding why you use the word 'lure'?! Octopus are places in a bowl of sea water for obvious reason. Captain Nick has a great respect for sea life, more than anyone I know. The best way to teach young adults and children is with hands on exprience, that way you have their full attention and the knowledge he gives stays with them for life. A respect for sea life is instilled within them. This have been proven to us time and time again from comments from parents and from second generation return visitors. We are both conscientious environmentalists and certainly not poor examples on how to treat nature to tourists. Most tourists I have met are well balanced educated adults who already know how to treat the environment. We keep Lazaretta island and the surrounding sea clean and clear of all debri. We have planted trees on the island. We are the only boat in Chania who takes time to look after the environment we work in - we really do not deserve your fictional statements.

We took Capt. Nick's tour after considering all the options, and were so glad we did. Capt. Nick is just great - knowledgeable and enthusiastic. His tours allow you to land on the island instead of just snorkeling near it. My kids had so much fun; my 11-year old said it was the best day he ever had! I thought 3.5 hours would be too long, but we didn't want it to be over.

We were under the impression that this was a boat trip on the sea to enjoy sightseeing and the water. It was in fact a swimming trip taking people out to a spot where one can swim in the sea. This was not marketed as such and for non swimmers disappointing.

Hello Hannah I think of 1 star more as devastation than disappointment and I'm truly sorry your feelings were that strong. We don't market our trips as anything else but exactly what they are (why would we?). We are only responsible for honestly and accurately describing what we do - we are not responsible for how you interpret what is being said to you. Both by e-mail and at the harbour front we are very clear in our description so I am very puzzled how you could possibly have understood anything else. After being in business over 20 years and out of 1,170 reviewers on TA you are the first to have misunderstood what is clearly being said to you - I'm afraid we cannot take responsibility for that. Our 1 hour trips are approx 30 mins for sailing and sightseeing and approx 30 minutes we stop and do a fish show under the glass while those who want to can swim. On our 3.5 hour trips we spend approx 1.5 hours sailing to the islands sightseeing and approx 2 hours on the little island for swimming and snorkelling. We find both swimmers and non swimmers generally completely enjoy our trips and we are honest in our description.

We singed up to this trip after very pushy and persuasive sales tactics and u have to say that the trip was not enjoyable. It was very coveyor belt, there is not much to see from the glass bottom, and the company has literature encouraging people/children to pick up live endangered marine life which is ecologically unsound.

You are completely entitled to your opinion Zoi which I respect and its what TA is for. I do however take exception to a couple of points. Our sales lady, Nicole, has been with us for many years. If there is one thing she is not its pushy. We have literally had thousands upon thousands of people she has dealt with over the years and not any one of them has every said this of her - they have infact often complimented her and said the opposite. I know her character very well and she has never been pushy as you describe. Our trip was like a conveyer belt? You have really lost me here. If there is one thing we are known for its the individual attention Captain Nick gives to everyone who sails with us. No literature exists on our boat at all encouraging anyone to do anything - I really don't understand this comment. Yes Captain Nick does encourage people, especially children to interact with sea life such as octopus and starfish. As far as I am aware neither of these two species are endangered and we are very careful not to damage them in any way. We consider this educational and of great interest to children and not at all damaging to marine life as you describe. We believe it actually teaches children to be more aware and considerate of sea life.

My partner and I booked a one-hour boat trip at 5pm for my birthday on 9th June. (We wanted to go on the three-hour but missed it by ten minutes - our own fault for not checking times!)

Upon boarding the boat and waiting a short while to see if any others would join, we left the harbour with only 4 passengers - myself, my partner, a lady and her young son. I was impressed by this as they could have made us wait a long time to try and attract more customers, or they could have cancelled the trip entirely - after all, they had only collected €35 maximum from the 4 of us!

Captain Nick is superb and I understand entirely why he is so proud of what he does and encourages people to pay reviews on Trip Advisor. He is funny, investing and interested in his passengers. He even let me steer the boat as it was my birthday! We met 4 other members of his team and they were also fantastic - the two ladies who helped us book, the man who chatted to us while we were waiting a short time, and the man who accompanied Nick on the boat - all very friendly, warm and enthusiastic :)

The thing I liked most about the trip was that I didn't have to behave like a "grown up!" I loved steering the boat, my partner was encouraged to snorkel, and Nick persuaded me to hold a starfish and put the octopus on my shoulder - although I pulled a face when he first suggested this, I think he knew I kind of wanted to try it!

There were also drinks available on the boat for only €1 each - when Nick first mentioned this, my immediate thought wad that he'd try to "sell" then to us add he'd not made much money for the trip, but though none of us bought any drinks, he didn't mention then again. Though I doubt he'd make much profit out of selling a beer for 1 euro anyway!

Though it was a short trip, I really enjoyed it. I've been on glass bottom boats before, where you literally sail out, go in the sea for a little while, then sail back in, so I loved all the extra effort Nick goes to to give the Wow factor - he supplies snorkels and flippers if you want them, he dives under the boat to feed the fish to give you more to see, he brings anything he finds underneath the glass so you can take photos, then brings it onto the boat for you to see and hold it.

I know I've gone on a little bit, and I'll add photos later if I can... but in summary, Nick is a gentleman with a real enthusiasm for what he does, in combination with a fantastic team of people and an understanding of the area, the sea and the creatures within it. I don't think I could suggest a single improvement; Nick's team has this thing down! :)
