Technically, Lake Voulismeni is no longer a lake. Currently it's just an extension of Agios Nikolaos bay, where the seaport is located. Briefly, the so called lake is connected with the sea and it's salty.
This geographical detail is not so important, the lake seems to be the main touristic attraction in town, anyway. Dozens of overpriced restaurants and souvenir shops line up on its shores while thousands tourists strolling up and down, taking selfies. Unlike the seaport, there's not much breeze around the like. Visited the place at the end of a hot day of August and there was a smell of rotten seaweed coming from the water.
However, all the buildings facing the lake are beautifully renovated, the entire scenery looks instagramic. Overall, it's not bad for a sunset stroll, although it's a place you can't skip in Agios Nikolaos.

The lakes history is very interesting and worth researching. Can walk around the lake - doesn’t take long and up the steps. The cafes round the lake are nice to sit at if you are happy to pay tourist prices. We enjoyed our time here.

This is not a bad review, the photo here on file does it more justice. We weere sold via a tour company 'The Lake' with restuarants around. Maybe in our excitement we felt this would a considerable size, however it boiled down to a lake smaller than our local park. By comparison no bigger than a cricket field.
It is surrounded by many resturants, likley 20 at the lower tier and perhaps 10 on the upper teir where this photo was taken. All are well priced with plenty of seats per resturants. The view is nothing more than a view of the otherside, other resturants, rock face and a small skateboard circuit, a few boats anchored.
There is nothing unpleasant, we visited mid day following a trip elsewhere. There are other resturants over looking the immedaite bay/port and side roads where shops and resturants are found.

Amazing place. All surrounded by restaurants and bar, also tourist information center. You can find free maps of the city everywhere. My favorite shop was a shop that sells real shells in different colors and shapes, also pearl. This was something unique i had never seen in other places.

Pleasant to walk there
Many narrow alleys with shares of others many souvenir shops
You have to compare and not buy in the first small shop come
Prices vary greatly from one shop to another
Watch out for the many restaurants that are all around the lake
The terraces are numerous and there again look well at the prices before sitting on the terrace some restaurateurs really exaggerate on their prices
Otherwise the ride is really worth it
The penalty

Except for the Legend that we lent this little lake did not seem extraordinary to us. Lined with restaurants and souvenir shops, one could almost pass over the bridge without noticing. We liked the alleys more with their old facades and shops that give off their woody smells, oils, soap or leather.

A somewhat unusual place, full of life. Very small lake in the center of the village surrounded by restaurants. The whole thing is rather cute but very touristy. 15 minutes is enough to tour it on foot. All around many shops, mainly souvenirs and jewelry, and a nice town beach on the other side. Sold as the St Tropez Crétois, you should not expect to find the atmosphere of this one, Agios Nikolaos rather attracts more popular visitors. We still found this visit very pleasant.
We arrived by car and it was difficult to find a place to park on the narrow and steep streets of the city.

Beautiful unmissable place in the city. This lake is considered bottomless and hosted the goddess Athena. The color is beautiful and very transparent. I advise you to park in the port car park for 4 € per day!

The most beautiful sight of the city of Agios Nikolaos is Lake Voulismeni. Nice streets to walk with shops and shops to drink your coffee and eat. From the mountain you take beautiful pictures all over town,

This is pretty much the centrepoint of the town and it’s really nice to look at. It is bustling with people and there’s always something to see.
A busy two way road runs through it so you need to be careful. It is lined with touristy bars and restaurants but we had a nice lunch at one of them overlooking the water.
Little fishing boats come and go as you eat your lunch so it really is a nice backdrop.

Hi, how long will it take from Palmera Beach hotel in Hersonissos to get to this lake? If travelling by bus, I'm visiting in August and want to get rough ideas
Thankyou
Written April 9, 2017
Our hotel was in Stalis, like 10 minutes from Hersonissos.
We drove about 40 - 45 minutes by bus to this city (approximately 50-60 minutes from Hersonissos).
(!) The bus will stop at the bus station and you'll have to follow the sings 'port'.
Enjoy your stay in august!

It’s really close and would be silly not to walk the odd 300metres to view it. It’s got some really pretty views
