A cave where Zeus was born. A must in Crete. Relatively difficult road by car but manageable by all means. Wear good shoes to walk up the hill to the cave’s entrance and then down 200 steps! Worth it!

This cave has been known for millennia for being the place where the king of the Olympian gods is believed to have been born. It is reached by ascending a steep path that takes about 20 minutes and must be done on foot, or by donkey, and starts from the vehicle parking area where we can find souvenir shops and bars. On the way up you have to be careful not to step on the excrements of these animals, which are littering the path. At the end the surface becomes somewhat more irregular, which together with the unevenness and the steps inside the cave make this visit very difficult to make for people with mobility problems.
The cave is open from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and admission costs six euros for adults and is free for children. Photos and videos can be taken inside. We spend about 15 minutes on the visit, which is done through a path with a railing in which you descend steps, go through a flat area and climb steps again to exit. It is not a very large space, there are stalactites and stalagmites that are not particularly spectacular, and the temperature remains around 15 degrees and there is a certain humidity that contrasts with the weather outside if you go in summer.
It doesn't seem like an essential visit to Crete, but it is interesting because it merges a physical space with the legend of the birth of the main Greek god. It is also interesting to see geological formations, although there are other caves that are much more striking in this regard. Apart from its geological interest, the cave lacks other interesting elements, apart from the ancient belief that it hosted Zeus in his childhood. Even so, I found the visit interesting, although objectively it is not too spectacular.
