A church suited for the area, dedicated to the greek seamen. Found it on our walk trough the area, wouldn't have seen it otherwise.

This is one of the most iconic places of Piraeus! Saint Nicolas is the protector of the Navy and the sailors, so it is located by the port. Very beautiful building with very beautiful paintings inside. It is a must see!!

Saint Nicholas Church is one of the most important churches in Piraeus - no wonder, for Saint Nicholas is the protector of all the sailors, and many of the children of Piraeus are or have been sailors. So, even nowadays, it's packed full of a Sunday, it offers all sorts of activities to the members of the congregation, and of course it attracts lots of tourists, because it's also one of the most beautiful churches of Piraeus, of Athens, maybe even of Greece as a whole.
Newly refurbished, it shines in a splendour of white and blue, it can be seen from afar, and the interior with its valuable paintings is even more magnificent. A real treat for every tourist interested in ecclesiastical buildings!

Saint Nicholas is an Christian Orthodox church dedicated a greek bishop of Myra that became saint. The name day and the official celebration takes part on December 6 and many officials pay their respect here as Saint Nicholas. Furhter more is the patron saint of sailors and merchants, so is very connected with Piraeus. The church was built in late 19th century (1889-1903) designed by the architecture Ioannis Lazarinos. Inside you can see many beautiful paintings but also work of the famous sculptor from Tinos I.Chalepas.

We spent the day in Piraeus whilst our cruise ship was berthed at the Piraeus passenger terminal.
There really is not a huge amount to do, or see in Piraeus. However one of the most prominent landmarks to be found along the busy roads bordering the port area, is the Church of Saint Nicholas. It is about a 10 minute walk from the terminal and is very easy to see as you approach it, along the waterfront.
The external appearance of the church is dominated by a very large blue dome. Blue domes are a common architectural feature of many Greek Orthodox churches. The interior of the church is magnificently decorated with beautiful panels of religious paintings and icons.
We visited on a weekday morning and even then, the steps leading to the church’s entrance were busy with worshipers coming and going. You are able to enter the church to look at the interior, as long as you dressed appropriately and you are respectful of the worshipers who are present.
In summary, the Church of Saint Nicholas is one of the few things that are actually worth seeing in the city of Piraeus. If you do visit the church, take a few minutes to pop inside. You will not be disappointed.
