About
The Athens and Epidaurus Festival is one of the most famous performing arts events in Greece’s calendar. Every summer, for the past 50 years, a whole host of performers have taken part; including Pavarotti, for example, and the festival’s programme involves open-air theater, opera, classical music, and dance at various locations around Athens including the modern concert hall to the ancient amphitheater Odeon of Herodes Atticus. Ancient theatrical performances also take part in the ancient Epidaurus Theater, two hours from Athens. Past performances have included actors such as Kevin Spacey (Richard III) and Ethan Hawke (A Winter’s Tale). It's a great opportunity to experience cultural events in atmospheric locations, surrounded by history.

Address
Neighborhood: Thissio / Makriyanni
Named after the well-preserved Thission (ancient temple of Hephaestus), Thissio is blessed with a small wooded park and some less frenetic streets that offer numerous quieter places to stay and eat. Largely pedestrianized Apostolou Pavlou Street runs between the Acropolis and forested Filopappou Hill, well worth climbing for more great panoramas, until it merges with Dionysiou Areopagitou Street. This leads to the up-and-coming area of Makriyanni, whose centerpiece is the magnificent new Acropolis Museum. Opposite the museum is the entrance to the southern slopes of the Acropolis, while the eponymous metro station nearby is at the top of Makriyanni Street, another strip of touristic cafés and restaurants.

So, last July we were in Athens and Epidavros and in planning came across the festival in our planning. I value local experiences and figured this was one. And it was. We went to a music concert (Calexici) at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus in Athens ( music in a 1500 yr old ruin-fantastic), and a play in Epidavros ( even older). Both were easy to ticket online from the USA and both were memorable and well worth the effort. Added very local experiences to what became a very memorable trip. I am continually reminded how easy it is to arrange interesting experiences from afar. Go the effort and the rewards are lifelong.

Get ready for magical summer nights, full of music, theater and dance! Enjoy an ancient Greek Drama in Epidaurus, about two hours drive form Athens, as ancient Greek would do...

You will be amazed to see the how the 3rd century BC place is preserved. This was sanctuary of Asclepius, the god-healer The Ancient amphi theatre is one of the best best preserved ancient building in Europe which can hold around 12,000 spectators. You will be really amazed to feel the amphi thetre and walk all way to top. There are one day tours which include Epidaurus and i would recommend to take that. By car you may take around an hour or hour and a half. There is good parking areas, good resturant and toilet facilities
