TRAVELLERS BEWARE: FAILED PICK POCKET.
Close encounter with pick pockets not once but twice during our Greece trip. Both happened inside MRT train.
Pick pockets are present in many countries and it depends on how they work their "modus operandi', some are lone ranger and some work in groups and they are very skilful.
Our trip to Greece was smooth, all worked out according to our schedule and itinerary. Nothing exceptional until the last 2days.
1st incident:
We boarded a train from airport to destination/hotel and as it's not our first time boarding a train to/from airport-hotel, we know which train to take and where to change trains and stop. So, all goes well until a "friendly" stranger knowing us being a traveler approached us asking us where we were going and so forth and showing us where we should stop .... so as to be polite I listen to him when he point on the train map direction where u need to look up........ however as my hubby already know where to stop, he didn't look up to where he pointed. but instead looked at him. Both my hubby's hands were full tending to our luggages. As my hubby didn't look up, he sensed something near his trouser pocket was out of place, so he quickly check his pocket and realised that someone tried to pick his pocket as the items had been moved.... It happened very fast especially when we were about to disembark from the train.
2nd incident:
Today being our last day at Athens, as usual we boarded a train to airport. As it is peak hour in the morning, the train was crowded too. This time, i tried to be more alert especially on a lookout on my hubby's pocket. Well, what do you know..... the pick-pockets, don't know how many but definitely more then one, they will all get close to you when the train is about to stop, as though they are going to disembark from train as well. I was standing a bit further away from the door and kept looking at his pockets. When i saw a hand about to go in his pocket, i shouted and caught a hand of a girl who was trying to pick his pocket when train reached a train station. Quickly she left the train.

Up till 2017 Train Services were Public. Now it is being Privatized and already fresh money are poring in the Facilities. New platforms are being built (to be opened on March 2018) and new electric trains are bought to minimize the travel distance from Athens to Thessaloniki down to 3.5 hours.

There is thieft who tried to steal my luggage when i went to toilet within a few mins. We quickly left the place by taxis. Becareful when you come here. Kids running to me, trying to steal my money when i open my wallet. or beggar beg for money for foods. A messy place, unsafe place to visit. Pls avoid this place if possible. Travel by train , announcement of the designation is in greek language not in English. if you don't english, you have to ask your neighbour when to get down the train. Not tourist friendly. Taxis nearby the trains station raise their taxis charges they charged me twice times more than the normal rate becareful esp tourist kenna chop by them. A few security guard are patrolling inside the boarding platform.

I always go to Meteora ( Kalambaka Train station) starting from here. Also to Karditsa.
I never had any problems, and i travel solo. Nobody ever approached me for pickpocketing but of course if you look like a lost tourist they might. I try to not look like a tourist.
I like the little cafe which sometimes sadly its full busy. Its a meeting point for many people there waiting some relative to picke them up after long train trip so its very busy place and feels safe. Never had a problem siting there.
The area is ok just the building is gray and it feels not so updated but you can buy tickets online and one ticket controler office in rural greek station sold me a ticket despite having no seats available (told me to sit in cafe of the train) so overal experience from TRAINOSE is friendly and very nice, and trust me I dont find Greece a very organized place. I also use long distance buses KTEL which are more convenient as they go to city center not at the edge of the city as most train stations do..
Improvements could be made but for Greek standards I have zero complaints. For pickpockets just do stand alone in a corner blend with ppl, keep vigilent of your stuff and maybe use the cafe if its not already full. If you have time Athens city center by metrol from Larissis is very close to kill time there and return to the train station.
I hope it improves in future.

Beware of pickpockets as well as all those people around who always try to approach you. Got a bad experience traveling in Athens.

The station has got a coffee shop and a few platforms. The information displays mostly don't work, so you have to ask which train is yours. Don't forget to validate your ticket in the validation machines before boarding (if you have purchased a small paper ticket).

Just outside the Larisa metro station, it looks old but convenient and take you to Kalambaka where the Meteora stands.

I had to travel twice in summer so I had to take the train. I stayed in a hotel nearby for this reason. The train was in time, which was the main thing. But I have to say a few things. This place has to be renovated from scratch. It so old and it is not modern at all.
I saw the walls in a waiting room that were fallen apart. It has to be painted straight away.. at least painted.. I had to go to the toilet. They told me that it was upstairs... I had to take my large luggage as I was travelling on my own... upstairs with no lift!!!!!! no one told me that there was another toilet outside at the end of the platform...the pavement outside of the station is so dirty.... why can't they clean the pavement? I mean just outside the EVEREST coffee shop...where the tables are...Also, I wanted to charge my phone and they told me to go to the VIP area... only there I could charge my phone.. As for the VIP area, it was just a simple room... nothing much...On my second visit, I was very upset. I was travelling very early in the morning 7.18 catching the train to Thessaloniki. It was dark and I had to go to the toilet. This time I visited the one on the end of the platform.... It was dark... and I was terrified when I realized there was no toilet paper in there and the worst NO LIGHT!!!!!!! NO CLEANING LADY.... this reminds me of places to third world countries. I was so angry when I came out I saw a man working for the railway station and I told him about the light..... and he answered that he did not know anything about it.... and left... another public servant who does not care.....I think that they should look into this matter.... people come and go all the time....

We stayed in Oscar Hotel, just opposite the Central Train Station. We had to catch a train from Athens to Kalampaka at 12 midnight. It is very small congested station with minimal sitting facilities. The announcements were in local language and the information booth person could not speak English. As the train arrived in time, there was a mad rush for the seats. Though we had a confirmed reservation in first class for a night journey, it was only a seat reservation - NO SLEEPING BERTHS IN THE TRAIN. Surprising?

Old, not that clean but with all the facilities needed.
Had already printed iur tickets to Meteora. We put our luggages in the lockers which can easily fit a medium or large-sized samsonite suitcase since we had to checkout at the hotel for 12am and our train is at 03:00 pm then we went to eat in front at the station souvlaki place.

Is there a train from Athens to Meteora ? What does it cost? Where does it depart from? How often does it depart and return?
