The area

Neighborhood: Kolonaki / Lykavittos
By far the ritziest neighborhood in town, Kolonaki is home to most of the chic boutiques and designer label stores. Here, the wealthy say no to austerity by dressing in their finest and spending hours in the trendy cafés around Kolonaki Square, sipping the most expensive coffee in Europe. The area also contains a couple of notable museums and cultural institutions, which add to the air of nobility. The leafy upper reaches of Kolonaki transition into Lykavittos Hill, the highest point in central Athens. Climb the paths through its wooded slopes to the tiny chapel at the top, from where you are rewarded with stunning views across the Acropolis to the sea and even the mountains of the Peloponnese on a clear day. The wooden amphitheater up here hosts regular concerts during the summer.

Some of the most renowned and accomplished artists worked on ornamenting this marvellous church.

It is dedicated to the Patron Saint of Athens who heard St. Paul preach in the Areopagus and was baptised in 52 CE. Subsequently he became the first Bishop of Athens.

Walking along Skoufa it presents a majestic profile. It was built in less than a decade, being unveiled in 1931.

The interior is embellished with exquisite icons, frescoes and mosaics. One of the latter portrays against a golden background a Saint with illuminated halo in gold who’s holding a holy book in his right hand.

An expansive space has a tremendous iconostasis with gorgeous artistic work and the saintly panoply.

Since I was staying in Kolonaki, I wanted to attend a nearby church service. St. Dionysios is very close to Kolonaki Square. The Holy Spirit (an Orthodox Holy day) service was beautiful and the chanters (and Proto Pselti) had the most amazing voice I have ever heard! A respectful and kind congregation. If you are new to an Orthodox service, kindly give a monetary donation at the front of the church when you light a candle.

This church is definitely one of the hidden masterpieces of Athens. It is one of my all-time favourite churches. The impressive holy church of the patron saint of Athens, is located in the center of the lovely neighborhood of Kolonaki and was finished in 1931. There is peace and charm inside the church as well as outside. The architecture of the church is special and it definitely has a lot from the ancient Greek architectural motifs like triangular pediments specially broken ones, arches, balustrades and ceramic roofs. In addition, the external façade is decorated by the famous plaster monastery style where columns -mostly Corinthian- are sculpted as if attached to the walls. Above all the famous turquoise green dome is breathtaking. If you can't attend one of the masses inside, you can walk from Kolonaki and visit the church as a monument. I highly recommend and you will never regret.

I love this church, not only as a stunning architectural masterpiece but also as a quiet and mystical place to retreat to for a bit while strolling in the buzz of Kolonaki, one of the most lively and vibrant areas of Athens.

Not to be confused with the Cathedral of the same name, this smaller but much more impressive church is only a few blocks away. To find it, face the cathedral and walk around the right side up Omirou (northeast) 3 blocks and turn right (southwest) on skoufa street and walk 1 block to the Church of Dionysius the Areopagite. Google lists it as 43 skoufa but the churches brochure lists it as 34 skoufa.

The church was started in 1923 and completed in 1931. Every inch of this church is decorated from the murals on the walls to the richly carved capitals on the pillars to the hand carve wooden panels. Even the floors have mosaics. It's not just a church it's a piece of art.

This is the neighborhood church in Kolonaki so it is well-maintained and well-decorated. The parishioners have money. It's a bit dark even during daylight. Very decorated and worth a quick visit.

Was awed by iconography and beauty of this church. We went in on a weekday and were surprised to find a priest there who was only too happy to answer any questions

The church ist very beautiful. You can see a lot of art inside and it is a great historic building. The windows are positioned in the ceiling so that you have a special light inside the church.

On my way to the Chapel of St. George, I found this Church. Since the ceiling of the entrance was painted very beautifully, I tried to get in for a second. But inside was much more beautiful and amazing with chandelier and other wonderful pictures, covered all over. Worth to visit and I spent quite some time to look around.
