About Athens Culinary Backstreets Walks
On this walk we will explore the culinary backstreets and secrets of downtown Athens, in search of the soul of this historic yet always vibrant city. We’ll visit an old-school dairy bar and a hidden gem of a loukoumades joint. We’ll sample souvlaki, and a kebab made according to a recipe brought to Athens by refugees from Constantinople. The walk will explore the hidden seafood eateries of the stoa, the arcades that are among downtown Athens’ most unique architectural features. There will be a few sips of homemade spirits, accompanied by an unforgettable bite in the center of the main fishmongers’ market. At once rough and beautiful, ancient and modern, the culinary backstreets of downtown Athens live on and tell the story of this city in a way few other landmarks can. Carolina was our “host” and made our learning about food, culture and history of Athens a wonderful experience. Our second CB tour and we have another one planned for later this year. Love the experience…

This food tour is a must do. We had Carolina who is a native Athenian, chef, food writer, and knows all the ins and outs of the food scene in Athens. She does a fabulous tour that includes Greek history, personal stories, and fantastic food. We tried all kinds of things from pastries, coffee, honey, cheese, charcuterie, souvlaki, olives, fresh fruit, picking our fresh seafood in the market and having it cooked onsite and some traditional dishes at a traverna. Come hungry and don’t expect to want much for dinner. Don’t hesitate - just book it. I will say sounds like Athens shuts down for most of august and they won’t be around, but come September and beyond this will be one of your favorite memories of your time in Greece!

We took a tour with Constantine and found this to be one of the major highlights (in a trip filled with highlights, but this one was definitely top 5). We learned so much about Plaka, Athens, and Greek Cuisine and history throughout the day. This was the first tour we took on our trip and it turned out to be incredibly helpful for understanding food and culture throughout the rest of our trip. The olive oil tasting ignited an appreciation that I never knew was lacking. I now understand why I hated salad with just a drizzle of olive oil - I always used low quality, bland oils. My niece (16 years old) discovered that she has a pretty spectacular palate for distinguishing flavors and enjoying some pretty challenging flavors. Also, as a teen, I was worried if she would enjoy it, but this was one of her favorite things that we did during our 3 week tour. This tour is a MUST for any and all, but especially for first timers. We saw so much, hit everything at the right time to avoid crowds or lines, and truly got an “insiders view” of Plaka. Thank you for everything Constantine! We still talk about this tour!

Thank you so much for the thoughtful review! We are so happy to see that you and your niece enjoyed exploring Plaka with Constantine, he is such a great guide, we feel lucky to have him and we are proud to work with knowledgeable and passionate people like him in all of our cities. A good olive oil does make all the difference to a simple dish! You can check out your Culinary Backstreets Passport on our website to see the stamps you have collected. We hope to see you again soon in one of our cities.
