About Athens Culinary Backstreets Walks
On this walk we will explore the culinary backstreets and secrets of downtown Athens, in search of the soul of this historic yet always vibrant city. We’ll visit an old-school dairy bar and a hidden gem of a loukoumades joint. We’ll sample souvlaki, and a kebab made according to a recipe brought to Athens by refugees from Constantinople. The walk will explore the hidden seafood eateries of the stoa, the arcades that are among downtown Athens’ most unique architectural features. There will be a few sips of homemade spirits, accompanied by an unforgettable bite in the center of the main fishmongers’ market. At once rough and beautiful, ancient and modern, the culinary backstreets of downtown Athens live on and tell the story of this city in a way few other landmarks can. Absolutely loved our Athens tour with Constantine, who is such a lovely, amazing person! We learnt so much from him and had a blast - it felt like we were spending time with a good friend who just so happens to be an expert food-loving guide :) Agree with the tips on doing the tour on your first day or two in the city - we went back to a couple of places we especially loved. Also we initially wondered if the tour was too long - but it absolutely flew by and we loved every moment. Book it now!

We did the “Keramikos Calling” tour and had a great time. We have done Culinary Backstreets tours before and are huge fans. In addition to great food you receive a lot of background information from people who know and love food as well as the local culture and history. If you have more than a day to spend in Athens, I’d definetely recommend you do book this tour. We did the tour September 2020 and all Covid risks were taking into consideration, we did feel safe throughout the day.

You absolutely want to do this tour on your first day in Athens! Carolina did an amazing job of weaving the history of Athens into the foods that we ate. It is A LOT of food so definitely come hungry! The tour lived up to the name of "backstreets" as Carolina expertly took me straight past the touristic streets and into the hidden gems that were tucked right off the main thoroughfares. I left the experience absolutely loving Greek food and, even more importantly, with a much better understanding of what Greeks eat and why. Be sure to ask questions as Carolina is a wealth of knowledge!!

Our guide Constantine was a fantastic communicator with a breadth of knowledge about his country that went beyond the culinary. He enhanced our understanding of the social and political influences which have affected Greek culture and food. Everything we sampled was delicious - the quality and variety was exceptional. For us, doing the tour on the first full day of our mini break to Athens meant that we got a whole lot more from our holiday - we knew where to return to!

I love that the winery came to us in downtown Athens! We got to try fantastic Greek wines of all stripes from an off-radar winery called Abelon, which has its estate near Olympia, in the western Peloponnese. The tastings were done at Ta Karamanlidika tou Fani - a landmark Athenian dine-in deli. I've been wanting to go there for ages because I'm always hearing great things about it from local foodies! So Culinary Backstreets couldn't have picked a better venue to launch their new Athens Wine Club. It was an intimate and cosy setting that felt like a night out with friends around the table; and not your regular wine tasting experience. Dionysia from Abelon travelled to Athens exclusively to introduce us to their marvelous wines. They will totally change your preconceptions about Greek wines (especially the rose with its fresh strawberry notes!) So between the Abelon label and the deli, we got two great new discoveries for the price of one: terrific wines, delicious charcuterie pairings - and the start of some wonderful new friendships! Very well-priced for the value of the experience.

Thanks so much for your thoughtful feedback! Each of our culinary walks and events is the outcome of considerable research. We work with academics in the field and our own team of experienced professionals – both guides and local journalists. We are proud to know that the money spent during the culinary walk or event goes to support businesses that we believe in, helping to preserve the social and cultural fabric of the cities we love so dearly. Most importantly, of course, we take pride in working with people who are very knowledgable about and extremely fond of the cities they live in. We hope to see you again soon.
