My husband and I are very fond of food tours and Alternative Athens didn't fail us! =) The AA Team proved their efficiency from the moment we booked our tour. They were very accommodating and responsive to our queries. This was further justified when on the day of the tour, Cristina, our tour guide, waited for a woman who was supposed... More

The neighbourhoods tour with Andreas was a truly excellent way of spending four hours. I came away feeling like a local with fantastic tips of where to find the best spanokopita, koulouri, sausage and gyro as well as a where to find a coffee in the Ottoman quarter of Monastiraki like a hipster. I also came away with a much... More

We booked the 4 hour 'Neighbourhoods' tour and were a bit worried we'd scheduled it for our first morning in Athens. There was no need. Andreas, our guide, quickly put us at ease and our group (3 people + the Guide) proceeded to fill the next 4 hours by wandering back streets, visiting a hidden coffee/cocktail bar, exploring a bunker... We (a couple) joined 3 tours with Alternative Athens: Mythological (with Alexandra); Food (with Andreas) and Neighbourhood (with Cristina). We loved all 3! It was a great decision to join the tours, because Athens is not Rome or Amsterdam where you may just walk and enjoy the sights. Athens is full of history and nice places, but it's hard to... More

We took the Alternative Athens Food tour on a sunny February day. Even though we've been to Athens many times before, and although we're quite familiar with Greek delicious food, it was still a great and surprising experience. The spontanious group of 8 tourists turned out to be very friendly and Tania, our fluent English speeker guide, has created a... More

An ideal tour if you want to see the real Athens. The alternative city tour gives you an insight into the history of Athens but also the way, Vassia, our guide combined the sights with the story-telling made it extremely enjoyable! Stroll through the lesser known parts of the city centre and when tired stop for a must-eat Greek pastry... More

A really enjoyable, interesting tour led by Vassia. We learned about the recent history of Athens and its evolution as a city seeing interesting areas we would never have seen and learned about without her. A really interesting and refreshing change from all the ancient history Athens has to offer which gave us a more rounded understanding of the city.... More

One of the best times we had in Greece was during this food tour. First of all, thank you Alternative Athens for being really flexible with our schedule. Due to an accident we couldn't attend on the originally set date, but they were really accommodating about it and quickly rearranged a tour for the next day. We are a group... More

My boyfriend and I had an amazing time with Vassia. We took the Neighborhood walk and got to know the areas we would never see if we were on our own... She was so knowledgeable and friendly! It's a pity we haven't had enough days in the city to take more tours with Alternative Athens.

Staying in Psirri / Gazi

Neighborhood Profile
Psirri / Gazi
Side-by-side neighborhoods Psirri and Gazi provide some of the city’s prime nightlife. The almost claustrophobic streets of Psirri feature an interesting blend of original small businesses with the restaurants, cafés and bars that have recently sprouted up. The central artery of Agion Anargiron Street has lively places to eat or drink. Further west, you can visit the peaceful ancient cemetery of Keramikos, then cross busy Pireos Street to find yourself in Gazi. With the huge Technopolis performance and art complex converted from old gasworks at its heart, you really have to come at night to appreciate this maze of bars at its best, although a daytime stroll will allow you to admire the excellent street art.
