We had a tournament there for our Paralympic sport, Boccia, and everything was covered in snow! It was awesome.

If you are interested in nature walks in forests and tiny hidden byzantine monasteries, Mt. Hymettus has quite a lot to offer, provided you have your own means of transport or visit as an organized group. It is not an area frequented by tourists. Do note that entry to the mountain is not allowed after sun down. Kesariani monastery is the most well known and most visited byzantine monastery (popular with schools and families), located in a forested area with nature walks, not too far away from the main road, so an arrangement with a taxi (agree on a pick-up) time may not be difficult to do. There are many hikers, bikers and mountain climbers in the weekend. There is a variety of wild flowers and plants in the Spring and Autumn. Like all mountains surrounding Athens, there are also some wild animals including foxes. Mt. Hymettus also has many caves (the Peania Cave is open for visitors) and some archeological sites and ancient pathways.

Have been there for a nice walk couple of times, you'll have a great panoramic view to Athens - the best time to go in the summer is close to sunset, not too hot and you'll have a nice breeze from the mountain.

Hymettus is the best mountain for a bicycle ride that none should miss if he visits Athens. If you didn't bring your bike with you, ask Athensbybike.com for a rental. Through Kesariani which is one of the most interesting neighborhoods of Athens, you can start exploring this beautiful mountain on which you could find even the ruins of an ancient temple and some Byzantine churches.
There are many places that you could stop and regain your strength, like the Kalopoula's kiosk where you could also taste some traditional Greek food.
The ride is quite difficult but the view of the city will 100% remunerate your sweat.

Excellent walks, great for running (although you need trail running shoes and need to watch out for the rocks) and wonderful location for bird watching. Excellent views over Athens and towards Salamina island.

We chose the path least travelled with treacherous gravelly mountain roads that had caved in some parts. Exciting for sure.
