The temple which is associated with the mythological rivalry between Athena & Posiedon for control of the city of Athens, is located on the Acropolis, adjacent to the Parthenon. It is largely intact. A stand out feature of its architecture is the 'porch of the maidens' supported by six figures of maidens (known as caryatids), which act as columns.

Erechtheion is a Temple dedicated to both, Athena and Poseidon, set just across the imposing Parthenon Temple on the Acropolis.
While the Parthenon dominates the site, Erechheion is smaller but more elegant.
Its six maiden statues serving as columns - Carathides are world famous and became a role model for many buildings worldwide.
Have in mind these out there are replicas, while the originals are preserved in the Acropolis museum.

The Temple of Érechthéion is an ionic temple of Athena, built during 421–405 BC on the Acropolis at Athens, famous largely for its complexity and for the exquisite perfection of its details. ... It is believed by some that the temple was erected in honour of the legendary king Erechtheus. The architect was probably Mnesicles.
The caryatids are six elegant female figures who supported the roof of the south porch of the Érechthéion (figures who do the work of columns—carrying a roof—are called caryatids). The figure wears a garment pinned on the shoulders (this is a peplos—a kind of garment worn by women in ancient Greece). These are now replicas. The originals are in the Acropolis Museum (with one in the British Museum).

still under reconstruction, which at the moment focuses on the parthenon, but still makes an amazing impression. The tribune used to receive the processions with columns in the shape of young girls makes an amazing impression. anyway I recommend to see their original standing in the acropolis museum.

The Porch of the Maidens is my favorite part of the Acropolis. On this last trip I had my three grandkids (ages 13, 12, & 10) with me, which made seeing it again even more special. What is the Porch of Maidens at the Acropolis? On the southwest side of the Erechtheion (temple) is the famous porch featuring six female figures, each 7 1/2 feet tall, called caryatids. In reality, they serve as architectural support columns holding up the porch. Although nicked and chipped, for 2,500 years the six sisters stood on the Acropolis, as wars and fires raged around them. Then in 1800, one of the maidens was kidnapped (removed) by an English ambassador and diplomat stationed in Constantinople (Istanbul), to decorate his mansion in Scotland. Legend has it that sometimes at night the remaining five caryatids could be heard crying for their lost sister. The kidnapped maiden was later sold to the British Museum and is now exhibited in the London Museum. The remaining five original maidens are now in the Acropolis Museum and the six figures currently holding up the porch are replicas. Even though the maidens in the Erechtheion are copies, this is still my favorite building in the Acropolis complex.

On the Acropolis this is the second largest temple and it is beautiful, especially the woman. I did not think it is the most impressive temple (Parthenon) but it is very worth it to take a closer look at. Walk around and read the sign and enjoy the temple, you won't regret it.

Steeped in myth and mystery it was marvellous seeing it just after opening time on a peerless clear sunny morning.

The Ionic beauty is wonderful from viewpoints all around. One of the most dramatic is the profile of the marvellous Caryatids, albeit substitutes with five of the originals in the nearby museum.

I LOVE this building called the Erechtheion. If I could give it more stars, I would. I can't explain why seeing this ancient building touched me more than the others at the Acropolis but it simply took my breath away. It is grand in its splendor and its history.

The Erechtheion is really a special building in so many ways. Obviously, you have the porch with the six maidens, which clearly is the first detail that one notices. But it's also special because it was dedicated to two different gods...Athena and Poseidon. The way these two temples relate to each other is as balanced as the history between these two Gods, especially as it relates to the naming of Athens. Make sure to see the detail on the ceiling of the portico on the back side of the temple. Also, note the olive tree and the (less than believable) legend that surrounds it.

The Erechtheion is the second largest temple on the Acropolis. It consists the Porch of the Caryatids with statutes of six maidens on one side and Ionic columns on the other side. It is not as crowded as the area around the Pantheon. There are great views of the city.
