The Byzantine Museum was my favorite of the museums I visited in Athens. The contents of the museum are beautifully laid out and the English signage is detailed and well written. Items are arranged chronologically but also thematically, with small areas dedicated to unique historical, religious, and social topics such as the making of icons, pilgrimages and historical travel guides,... Visit this unique museum. For more than 1000 years, Greece was under the Byzantine empire. Dark but fascinating ages! Religion plays a important role in everyday life. But you can feel the power of hope for the citizens through the icons that date more than 800 years.

We opted to visit Byzantine Museum instead of all too famous Acropolis and we are glad we did so. The entrance fee was much lower but the timeline the exhibition covered spanned 15 centuries with beautiful art of all forms. There were not too many people in the museum and we were offered a free tour by local guard. Also,... More

This museum has the exhibits arranged chronologically and with very informative descriptions of both the time periods and the artifacts of those periods. Beautiful artwork and a rich connection between the culture and religious expressions and life are depicted very clearly and thoroughly. We spent 3+ hours here and were permitted to take photos. A very enjoyable place to visit... More

The Byzantine museum is maybe not the most famous museum in Athens but I rank it one of the best. On the outside the museum may not seem much but that's because the museum is underground for the most part. Inside there are many artifacts and pieces of art connected to the Byzantine empire. If you want to learn about... More

Athens is famous for its classical /ancient days but there has been a christian Athens centuries later; this is being presented here- plus numerous exhibits from other parts of Greece and Asia Minor relating to Orthodox christianity.

We spent three hours in this wonderfully laid out museum. We could have spent days. There is so much to see. There are different sections such as one for the Coptic Christian tradion of Egypt. There are some wonderful icons. On the way out we saw the latest addition which was a Russian icon which had been donated by Vladimir... More

There are so many beautiful and interesting things to see and learn about in this museum. You might want to spend a lot of time here, so be prepared to block off a chunk of time if this is on your travel itinerary.
