The area

Neighborhood: Monastiraki
Monastiraki is a souvenir-hunting enclave with a difference. Apart from the dramatic backdrop of the Acropolis, its network of alleys and pedestrianized streets surround the remains of both the Greek and Roman agoras, adding the quaint concept that this is where the ancients also came to shop. Named after the tiny monastery church at its center, Monastiraki Square is a lively spot by day or night, with street peddlers vying for your attention to sell you nuts and sweets. Down beside the metro station, the official Flea Market is an unbroken row of souvenir shops until you come to antique-oriented Platia Avissinias, while Pandrossou Street on the other side of the square offers more tourist shopping. The pedestrianized street beside the Greek Agora is lined with cafés offering fine views.
How to get there

Very crazy and outgoing people, accessible place and often with live Greek music!
An interesting hidden gem on this mainstream area.

Market square opposite monasteraki subway with alleys to flea market, restaurants etc.
Its it the heart of Athens, a nice place to visit with your family to shop, eat and roam around. There are a lot of antique shops, restaurants and historic sites.

A very old Athenian sq., with a lot small shops of Antiques(!!!??) beware, and second hand market (flea Market) every Sunday. Possible to find interesting items in very good prices.
There is also, a typical old, mezedepolio, that means restaurant with many dishes, for ouzo or wine. Live music, on weekends.

We found nice old souvenirs to take along as gifts for our friends. We also visited the concept store SHOP nearby, at Ermou 112A st. where we did our shopping for the whole family. The only place in Athens where you can find this wide and unique selection of designers & casual wear, lifestyle products, jewelery and accessories.

Walking through the flee market you will get the sense of different time. The shops with the antiques, the old books and the discs are just lovely. You can find everything there. If you do not want to buy, it still worth to visit it, especially in a Sunday morning. You can have a coffee or a drink in the many beautiful cafeterias around the place. wear comfortable shoes, be careful of the crowd and your things (especially on the Sundays).

Nice place to spend some time, especially on a Sunday. Lots of antiques, and junk. Just browsing is fun. Be sure to visit the restaurant of the same name in the square. Lovely food, and I believe it has jazz music on Friday and Saturday nights. Check it out.

Not sure where this area/street starts and ends. In the old part of town full of shops selling everything a tourist is looking for. Some nice little bars and restaurants

Avysinias Square is more a street than a square ,it's sort of interesting but sort of boring at the same time, some great taverns here which are cool places to chill out but the majority of the retail outlets here are all more or less trying to sell the same sort of items, this square and area was not for me but that's just my opinion.

This is a very busy square. The most prominent features are the Church of St. Mary Pantanassa and a Mosque. It is close to the flea market.

Take the alley north of the monasteraki subway stop and head down there. You'll find all kinds of antique and knock knack stores, including army surplus gear, books with the Greek classics (with modern and Classical Greek side by side) ceramic ware, furniture (epiplas), old 33 records, coins (mostly pretty junky ones), and so forth. Bargain, like there is no tomorrow, and a lot of,this stuff you can pick up quite inexpensively.
Worth an hour or so. But just remember, you have to fit all this stuff in your bag!
