The area

Address
Neighborhood: Monastiraki
Monastiraki is a souvenir-hunting enclave with a difference. Apart from the dramatic backdrop of the Acropolis, its network of alleys and pedestrianized streets surround the remains of both the Greek and Roman agoras, adding the quaint concept that this is where the ancients also came to shop. Named after the tiny monastery church at its center, Monastiraki Square is a lively spot by day or night, with street peddlers vying for your attention to sell you nuts and sweets. Down beside the metro station, the official Flea Market is an unbroken row of souvenir shops until you come to antique-oriented Platia Avissinias, while Pandrossou Street on the other side of the square offers more tourist shopping. The pedestrianized street beside the Greek Agora is lined with cafés offering fine views.

So many things to look at and buy right alongside thousands of years of history!
I love good shopping and this flea market is among my favorite markets I've ever attended. It's a combination of new items as well as old. There are pockets where people display antiques at fun, negotiable prices (see my pics). And you can also buy souvenirs or newer items here. It's quite extensive and runs along some very interesting ruins like (I think it was) Hadrian's Library so it's a very Athens experience. It's conveniently all day on Sunday. I wish I lived closer because I'd attend on a frequent basis if it were nearby. It's right at the subway station, making it very convenient from all over town. Spend an hour or five : )

Sunday Flea Market, love the stands and booths and blankets with wares
If you're in Athens for days and days, and you've gone to ALLLLL of the primary must-see sites, all the museums, all of the ruins - then if it happens to be a Sunday, go to this flea market! It's tons of fun - special booths and blankets set up for you to rummage through and rummage some more! I think some mistake this flea market for the general area of Monastiraki, which is not the same......there are lots of brick and mortar souvenir shops in the area, but don't mistake those for the flea market, where vendors come and lay out their blankets and lay out their wares. We spent several fun hours here, back alleys, squares, lots to see and well, rummage through! Have fun!

    Row of souvenir stores
This is not really a flea market - at least not on weekdays when we were there. It’s a long line of souvenir shops with predictable and tacky stuff probably all from China. Some nicer stores but mostly just more of the same things. In a small section we did find some antique stores and I was able to purchase a nice brass knocker and some other little things.

    Great Flea Market
A Tourist Trap but worth walking through to buy souvenirs and other items to bring home. This is a walking flea market and Hadrian's Library, Ancient Agora and Temple of Hephaestus are all in this Square. Worth seeing. Right off Ermou Street. The attractions cost to enter and didn't seem worth it, you can easily just take pictures through the fences.

    Variety!
The flea markets has lots of shops! We were able to shop for souvenirs for the Grandkids easily all in one place. It is a cute little street with many small streets off to each side. You can find just about anything in the area. We enjoyed just looking. You do have to watch prices- otherwise, don’t grab items at the first place you come to. Walk the street and then go back to the places that were less expensive. They carry a lot of the same items and the prices vary from store to store. We saw small items range from 80 cents to $1.50. Bracelets from $1 to $5 and these were for the exact same item! Still a great area to shop!

I was extremely didaapojted after having visited so many markets around the world. The hype behind this market is overblown.

Firstly, the shops are repetitive. Some are unique selling local Greek tourist type souvenirs but the rest are mainly your local bags and clothes. Beware that prices start extremely high so after ask for half the price espescially with the 2 bag selling shops in the middle with a bunch of dudes and at the end of the alley belonging to an old lady. It's a hustle so save time and avoid it.

It's nice for a quick 10min or so walk about to see but many other souvenir shops around Athens. So, take your time and check prices everywhere before actually purchasing. Plaka has nice items around it's streets.

It's an area with tourist shops and an overpriced flea market as well.
Busy on Sundays.
If you have time left, it might be a nice idea to have e look.
Admission is free, but beware of pickpockets.

After walking around all of the ancient sites, we walked back to our hotel through this flea market. It's what you'd expect, souvenirs, clothes, art, and other miscellaneous items. It's worth it if you have time to kill or if you're looking for random little things to take back home.

Great place to go for souvenirs, clothing, jewelry, etc with good prices. Out of the about 20 shops we visited, only one of the sellers seemed pushy to sell. An overwhelming majority were very kind and helpful.

One can start at Monastraki Square and goes down an alley, however first come a lot of souvenir shops and only later the real flea market starts. The souvenir shops pretty much have all the same things, postcards, magnets and so on, the usual touristy stuff. So if you need any souvenirs, a good place to get them.
After a while one reaches the flea market which is mainly on the sides of the alley and at the one or other smaller square or intersection. On the flea market everything is available, from clothing to records to books to furniture and so on. For bargain or antique hunters probably a good place to look around.
There are also lots of cafes and restaurants along the way and it is a nice stroll, so even if not interested in souvenirs or flea market stuff a good way to spend some time in Athens.

A quaint little street in the heart of Athens. Full of little shops selling lovely souvenirs, Olive oils, saps , clothes, backgammon boards and the nicest chessboards I’ve ever seen. We never felt unsafe or pressured by anyone. All shop owners approached us politely and we were always greeted with a smile and with the upmost respect.

Good option to buy souvenirs and the best restaurant area with a great and varied gastronomic offer. Very good service and food at an excellent price.
Be careful, at night it is not a good area. Fights and robberies.

We stayed in Monastraki so visited a couple of times. Sunday was fab! Locals with pop-up stalls next to junk shops and market traders selling everything from art, jewellery to vinyl records and the kitchen sink! Plenty of places to eat to suit all tastes.
