Walking along Ardittou it’s easy to miss this attractive church located in fine greenery within a park.
Great stone craft is one of its highlights enhancing the fine facades. A centre belfry has a pleasing hue, especially in the evening light, and contains a mini-carillon.
Completed in 1872, it honours the Samaritan Fotini who according to lore gave water to Jesus. Given its position in the large park it’s popular for events and ceremonies.

Follow the road down from the Temple of Zeus for about 300 metres and you will come across this Byzantine church down a path at the major junction. I was unaware of its existence and had gone there to see the Ancient Sanctuary of Pan, which was basically a very small cave in the rock next to this church. There are bench seats there, so its an opportunity to relax and rest your feet in a place which most tourists never visit. The church was built at the end of the 19th century, but appears to be older. The door was locked, but the concreted area around it was cleanly swept and it was evidently used frequently. The signs were in Greek, but I presumed these to times of services, The Ilissos in the name comes from the River Ilissos, on whose river bank it was built. The river is no longer visible.

Characteristic Greek church, one of the first monuments seen in the city.
It is located within the park which also includes the archaeological remains of Delphi.
Made of stone and like all the Orthodox churches in the area, very beautiful, evocative and characteristic.
