Impressive wall walk.

This is a lovely wall, the defensive wall around the town. It gives wonderful views of the surrounding countryside but also gives an insight into the defensive battlements that would keep the village safe from invaders. It is well preserved and very interesting. The village inside of the wall is also very interesting.

My husband and I walked the Camino alternate route, through this old fortified part of the city. Quite impressive stone fortifications. Lots of shops and activity.

Valença is a walled town located on the left bank of Minho River, approximately 25 km from the Atlantic Ocean. The municipality is limited to the north with Minho River establishing the border with Spain.
The fortress that looks down to the Minho River and Spain. It has been destroyed several times whether it were the Barbarians, the Moors, the armies of Asturias and Leon or even the French troops in the 19th century, it have always been restored and still very well preserved.
Valença's fortress is a piece of gothic and baroque military architecture.
There are great views across the river to Spain on the other side. There is a whole small and prosperous town within the walls. There are shops, restaurants and hotels.
We only stayed for about an hour but it is a place I would love to come back to and explore more. To walk around the town, to go down to the old bridge from 1879 and walk across to Spain and back again, to explore the fortress' walls.

Amazing Fort Redundant Shopping
Apr 2018 • Couples
We drove into and stayed at the Pousada on in the village, and we enjoyed wandering along the battlements and through the narrow streets of the town. The shopping seems to consist of about 50 shops all selling the same goods, specifically linens In one for or another.
The are number of restaurants and wine shops but not much in the way of better grade shopping. Stick to the churches and fortress.

Buen Camino
Sep 2017 • Solo
My wife and I recently completed our Camino de Santiago and prior to starting our camino from Tui, Spain, we walked across the bridge from Tui to Valenca to explore this old fort and to enjoy this wonderful town. There are many shops, vendors and restaurants to enjoy. We spent an entire afternoon here, people watching, enjoying cafe con leche and capturing the magic of this old village. Very nice : ).

Military Parade Grounds
Jul 2017 • Couples
After passing through the narrow gate of the first of two walls that enclose the small village of Valenca you will enter into this open space that is used by the military as a parade or training grounds. The Tourist Information office can also be found here.
