This was a mix of some beautiful art and a boatload of information about the institution. There are entire sections dedicated to biographies of the individuals involved and then other sections that housed collections of paintings and sculptures. We spent an hour here because we flew threw the biography portion, but this also included us visiting the little church next door.

If you love looking at massive portraits of wealthy, dead, old blokes then this is definitely the place for you as that's 80% of the experience.
We came as we were under the misapprehension there would be more medical equipment, more information about how treatments had changed over the centuries, and maybe even some stories about patients and their recovery. Nada.
There was an interesting portrait of Jesus in a blood bath aka the font of life, with a painted wooden ceiling and an explanation of the bizarro sculpture outside the building.
Also, the staff were unfriendly and treated us with suspicion as soon as we arrived and tried to use our Porto museum card for a paltry 25% discount off the 10 Euro (!) entry fee. The disdainful way one female member of staff was staring at us as we walked around was frankly unhinged.
Don't waste your money, your time or your good vibes.

I went here because it was next to my hotel. My understanding was that it would be a museum with the history of the city of Porto plus the church. I left there still not understanding what I was seeing. The translations to English were not very good. I am sure the museum means a lot more to locals, but for a non-local, I could not get the gist of it.

Small museum of religious works in Rua das Floras towards the end coming from the station.
Entrance is 10 EUR - really expensive for what it is. It's very small - I don't remember how many rooms, but really not many.
Reception not very friendly - explanation panels almost non-existent or placed so much in the dark that we couldn't see anything.
The interest is not in the quality of the works here - no major work; just local trinkets. Lots of paintings of the founders and donors but really of minor interest for tourists. Fortunately we have access to the beautifully decorated performance rooms as well as the adjoining Church of Mercy. But even that remains expensive for the quality.

As museums go, this one is well up there. The exhibit is well planned and thought out, and done both in English and Portuguese which does help. The building itself is very interesting. My favourite part of the visit were the display of antique medical tools, and the short video of the unrealized renovation of Porto to make the church easier to access. I’d definitely recommend visiting this museum. It’s not that expensive, and there is really something for everyone here.

Couldn’t believe how few people were looking through the museum and church - we only saw half a dozen others during the hour or so we were there.
A very interesting insight into the work of this charitable organisation, topped off with a visit to the church at the end.
Very centrally located and well worth the visit.

I really do not recommend this museum. You will see the history of the hospitals and care facilities of the city, and some mediocre portraits of the doctors and benefactors. It's all forgettable. Your entrance fee allows you to see the interior of the church from the choir. We had to ask for someone to let us in. The whole experience is not worth the time. Go do something else.

the museum and its next door Church of Mercy stand as a tribute to the generosity over the centuries of the wealthy merchants of Porto toward the mentally ill and physically disabled poor of the city. Religious icons and portraits of the major benefactors of the Misericordia health care facilities fill the museum, while the facilities of the small church next to the museum reflect the baroque artistry of many of the Roman Catholic houses of worship concentrated within the old city.

We just missed a Picasso exhibit by a couple of days but decided to see this museum anyway. Glad we did - both architecture and organ made it worth it. We got to walk right up to the beautiful Iberian organ in the loft above the chapel - and marveled at the horizontal pipes.

This is an interesting museum but a little overpriced for what you get. It has some interesting displays about the history of Porto.

Does this attraction give me some clues of the political history of the area? Or is it primarily pretty artifacts to see?

Porto, Portugal
The museum tells the history of the institution, and of the city, focusing on various aspects of life in Porto, because Misericórdia do Porto is one of the oldest institutions in the region, and was founded in a time of social, economic and political turmoil. The history is of course told through art pieces, artefacts and technological solutions.
