    Good
We walked across the bridge but the main side is more attractive. We also did a day tour- I hate organising tours - but this was quite good and didn’t spend too much time on any one activity. A 45 minute “cruise” along the Douro was enough, as was the tasting of 3 ports and wines.

    An unforgettable experience!!! Simply heavenly!!
A truly stunning place which left us breathless and felt regretful for not spending more time exploring the beautiful River Douro Valley . The serenity of the river and valleys felt heavenly. A must visit place for anyone who is looking for a refuge away from city noise and crowds .

The Douro River and it’s RIver Cruises: truly a wonderful adventure.
The Douro River and the associated cruises that sail up the river is truly one of the emerging markets that contrast positively with the other river cruises in Europe. Portugal and the Douro River in the north of the country, running east and west, is really a very special and NEW market that has been developing for the last five to fifteen years. You don’t see the hundreds of river cruise ships that you see and experience on the other main rivers of Europe…and that is a good thing. While we did see a number of other craft (we were on the ms Andorhinha with Tauck), they were really few and far between. The typical cruise up the river starts in Porto, the second largest city I believe in Portugal after Lisbon to the south. The sailing up the Douro takes about three to four days as you make stops in progressively smaller and smaller cities and towns. Plenty of houses mark the river bank but a surprising lack of docks and pleasure craft; yes, you do see some but very few considering the beauty of the area. BTW, between Porto and the Portugal/Spain border you do use five navigable locks as you go up river, very similar to what you see in other parts of Europe. All of the river cruising ships have to be able to lower their top structure (bridge, eating area, etc.) to some degree as they manage the travel given a number of low bridges that you have to traverse. The wine country, primarily port wine, plus the olive trees, the wonderful people, the wineries that will teach you how port wine is made from the planting of the vines to the shipping of the finished product, plus the stunning food and general friendliness of all, makes this river cruise and the Douro Valley truly one of a kind. Very highly recommend you make time for this..and consider doing a River Cruise from Porto up to the Portugal/Spain boarder. Truly outstanding.

Beautiful scenery and wineries at Douro river
We travelled by train from Porto to Régua (about 2 hours). There are 2 beautiful wineries walking distance from the train station. Very quiet, great views, no tourist buses or crowds, excellent choice of wines and ports testing. We also took a small boat 2 hours river cruise. Easy and not expensive.

    Superb
I was in the basement on my own and I’d say you’d have to be very organised to stay as a couple. It would have been lovely to have a lower window but it was the bargain basement, although the floor above didn’t score that much better for the extra cost. Fantastic staff especially our tour leader and amazing driver. Food fantastic, entertainment excellent, good tours although port and wine tours could learn a thing or two from South Africa! Lovely boat with good facilities. River very peaceful.

The most beautiful wine country in the world
This is probably the most beautiful wine country in the world. The wines are great and Port wine is only made in the Douro Valley. If you don't like Port, don't drink it (although it is a shame to miss), but don't miss this beautiful region. Even in late October, when it may rain, it is still worth it.

    Highly recommend this tour
The Douro River wine tasting tour with Living Tours exceeded our expectations. The tour was very well organized. The views, the tastings and the river cruise were amazing. The lunch was very good. Thanks to our expert driver Lucas, we felt safe and comfortable during the ride on winding roads despite some drizzle and fog. And our excellent guide Jose Pereira, who was very knowledgeable, friendly and professional, made this day the highlight of our trip to Porto. We highly recommend this tour with Living Tours.

    Magic and music
I never wanted to leave. I could live here. There is magic and music around every turn. Definately walk into the town of Porto. Don't miss Foresta Cafe. Definately cross the bridge on the top level and listen to music in the park, looking down on the river. Just walk and discover and keep walking and discovering. We can not wait to come back!

Beautiful river is the heart of the city.
We stayed in an apartment overlooking the river which was amazing. From the beautiful misty sunrise to the colourful sunsets over ponte de dom luis every day, it was lovely. We used to sit on the balcony just watched the boats go by and the wildlife. It's definitely the heart of the city.

    Good Trip
Took the train from Porto (Sai Bento station) to Pocinho, a 3.5 hour journey each way. The tracks runs along the Duoro River for a lot of the time and through the area with vineyards. The trip is well worth it. A return ticket for a pensioner was about 15 Euros. Pensioners get a large discount in Portugal so remember to take your passport to the ticket office. There is very little at Pocinho, there are a couple of places to get food and a coffee. The big boats do not operate from Porto up the Duoro River in winter (Oct - Mar), because of risk and maintenance they do not operate the numerous dams they now have on the Duoro. The train is a good alternative.

This was our first river cruise so we had no idea what to expect.
Airport transfer was slow but okay. Welcome on board the boat was good and room excellent but then we had paid for 1 of only 2 deluxe cabins available on Douro Splendour so expected the best.
On the first day cruising the lock was broken so we lost time resulting in tours being reorganised, including missing one your entirely which we only realised when we sailed past.
Boat staff were brilliant and food excellent and plentiful.
We felt our tour guide was new and learning as he had little to say and consulted Google a lot. The coach tours were long (up to 2 hours for Salamanca) and lacked information on locations, history, nature etc apart from an excited announcement about Storks and their habits.
We were surprised to find that other boats can moor right next to you in the evening so you have to close your blinds until you or they move the next morning - a bit claustrophobic. The swimming pool turned out be about 450 cms deep so no actual swimming.
We may have missed out some things as the TV info was not always kept up to date and our room speaker was not working so we never heard announcements if any were made.
We felt the Riviera cruise guide and Director were not as good as the boat staff but that's just our opinion.
Based on this trip to Porto I probably would not do another river cruise.

The Douro River flows through Porto and out to wine country. It is wide and calm. In the city there are many boats that look like the ones that brought the wine to Porto from the valley and you can take a boat ride. When you are in the Douro Valley there are also boat rides that go by the beautiful terraces hillsides. That was wonderful to do.

The best way to admire the Douro river is taking a river cruise called "Six bridges cruise". It departs from the old town Porto riverfront - Ribeira.
First it goes inland to the last bridge, turns around and sails to the Douro confluence with the Atlantic returning then to the starting point. It lasts something around an hour. Very good explanations of passing by attractions along the way with beautiful scenery on both sides of the river.
Price is 15 Euros pp, if I remember correctly.

Walking on the banks of the Douro River is like living in a movie ... Do you know those movies that warm your heart and make you daydream? That's how I felt, walking along the banks of the river, seeing those beautiful colorful houses, crossing the D. Luis I bridge and walking calmly down the street full of cellars and street vendors ... We had a very pleasant day, and saw a magnificent sunset, followed by a cold but very beautiful night, accompanied by live music ... It was a fantastic day and I highly recommend planning a day to stay in this region! It's sooooo worth it.

Traversing one of many bridges over the Douro while in Porto was an experience I’ll have etched in my memory for a long time. This river doesn’t compare to those like, say, the Ohio River or the Mississippi…because Porto is so hilly, it’s as if you’re driving across two jagged cliffs with a river in the middle. Not exactly so, of course…but the sensation I felt was very similar. The views were just captivating.

Next time I spend more structured time in the city, I’ll actually head to the banks of the river and experience the water more intimately. But for now, I’m confident in my five-star review. The Douro is a MUST for all Porto visitors.

Our guide Bruno was a lot of fun, although his aggressive driving got two of our party somewhat car sick. The highlight of the day was a great lunch at a very local restaurant, Churrasqueira Pinhão, in Pinhao. Food was great, particularly the drunken cake for dessert. Lovely area.

Sandro brought us from Porto to the wineyard Amarante, the original wineyards of Manuel “D’Origem” with a unique site seeing and then to the Sandeman’s visit. A full day experience with a great Portuguese local, who shared with us a lot of previous experiences as an airline lieutenant. We highly recommend and thank for his hospitality. Safe and smooth driving, decent price.
