This park is a pleasant area of green that was created in 1865 and features large mature trees and some interesting modern art of men on benches in various positions by the famous Spanish artist Juan Munoz. Worth a look.

We walked across this park and had the time of our lives! It is just so lovely! The big trees are amazing. There is a lot of greenery, and a few other features, but the best attraction would have to be those sculptures of the men on the benches. Just beautiful. This amazing garden is in a great spot, opposite the Courts Building on one side, and the Clerigos tower, on another side. A lovely spot for relaxation.

The common name for this city garden is “Jardim da Cordoaria”. It was redesigned some years ago and, although at that time there were many dissonant opinions about what was being done to it, it turned out to be a beautiful “refurbishment“. The designed incorporated stone stairs are functional, as well as aesthetically very attractive! There is a group of sculptures layed out at the outer perimeter that are very appealing: they appear to be real people sitting or lingering about the garden, merging into it just like real people. There are a few older, classic stone or bronze sculptures that were kept as well, reminiscent of their time. In summer it provides shade and coolness to Porto’s downtown and really contributes to the city’s beauty. From this city garden one can see the famous “Clérigos” Tower, a very beautiful church eith a museum and an absolute must to visit!

The park has trees from all over the world. Some are very unusual having survived diseases and stress. Look for the huge bases. The are sculptures of old men in threes sitting or hanging from bleachers. The men are happy, laughing, and amusing. The park is across from Clerigos Tower and a block from Livraria Letto. It is well worth a stroll in nice weather.

A lovely public park, that accommodates all the visitors needs, from historic monuments, to admire to lovely ponds to enjoy, plenty of seating to just watch the world go by.

Sitting opposite the Photography Museum is the small park called the Joao Chagas park as the official name - but more commonly know as the Cordoaria park after the Bishops ropery which used to be situated in this same spot.
The garden is full of tall trees providing shade, and apparently tropical plants in season - but the most striking thing now in this colder autumn period are the sculptures by the Spanish artist, Juan Munoz. There are 13 figures sitting on benches/rails around the park. They are always happy and excessively laughing - at you, at each other - or just happy? Who knows - but you cannot help but smile when you watch them.

As others have said, this is a lovely park opposite Clerigos Church. The laughing men statues on the high benches are great. Definitely a good place to chill for a while.

My wife and I came across this small park after having visited Antiga Cadeia da Relacao (the old prison) just across the road. It is also located near to Clerigos Tower. We thought that this would be a nice chill out spot for a time, and it was.
It is also known as Cordoaria's Garden.
One of the main attractions is undoubtedly the amusing men sculptures on the tiered benches. Mostly in groups of three, but see if you can spot the group of four! Amusing, good for a photo stop, or for that selfie!
The historic urban serene park also features a variety of trees and plants, statues, a pond, children's play area, and a bandstand. Be sure to take a look at the thickness of some of the tree trunks!
We both enjoyed our time at the small park, and would definitely recommend a visit.

A great place to chill during day and night. It's a spot for every occasion and by night it's full of people and with bars/pubs.

Does someone know the story of these large trees ? I have never seen trees like that before
Written November 5, 2019
Hello Mylène T. Unfortunately, I do not have specific information explaining the size and especially the shape (anomaly as to the size of the foot of these trees) of the row of plane trees. Is it from that row of trees you're talking about? The João Chagas Garden, also known as Jardim da Cordoaria, in Porto was founded in 1865 by the Viscount of Vilar d'Allen, whose real name is Alfredo Allen, a prosperous British trader based in Porto, named Viscount on the 13th January 1866 by King D. Luis I of Portugal. The age of this urban park could therefore explain the size of these trees. This garden has for a long time served as a botanical garden in Porto for the great variety of plants found there. As for the anomaly in the shape of these plane trees, it could be related to the consequences of the terrible cyclone that hit the Iberian Peninsula in the night of February 15 to 16, 1941 and that would have caused a lot of damage to Porto and to this park, breaking the trunks and branches of several trees. But, these are just hypotheses. Good research …
