Very nice theater located in Praça da Batalha next to our hotel from where we could also see it. Unfortunately at the time we went it was closed and we couldn't see it inside but from the outside it looks spectacular. They told us at the hotel that the theater was built between 1796 and 1798 and that it was named after Prince Regent João and who would later be crowned King João VI of Portugal and was initially called the Prince's Theater for this reason.

This is a truly beautiful theater building. The outside is astounding and monumental and set in an open square with some cafes nearby. The lobby is also pretty. I did not attend a performance but did go in to view the lovely marble lobby.

On the way to my hotel, The Mercure, to check in, I saw a banner for a performance at this theater on the same block. Performance was “Between outside and me”, performed by Akram Khan, and, Jermaine Spivey and a cast of dancers. It was that night and it was My first night in Porto. The ticket was 5E, front row. The performance is what I would call modern dance. The performance was absolutely beautiful. Brought a smile to my face. How lucky to have such an enjoyable night only one hour since I checked in my hotel.

We went on the tour of the theatre including back stage areas.
Our lady tour guide was superb telling us about the history and the workings of the theatre
This is a fantastic building to have a tour off.

An great tour with a knowledgeable tour guide. She gave us a history of the theater and should us every aspect of a theater - from the top level tech walkway, to below the stage. Also the stage, as well as the theater and dressing room. The cost was 10eu and well worth it.

We walked into the building just to see the foyer and spoke to the young lady behind the reception desk. We decided to take the 1 hour guided tour (€3 with Porto card). It was excellent (although she stated up front it would be in Portuguese, she provided audio devices which gave us the information in English and went out of her way at each stage to ask if we had questions and to provide information in English). Overall we were very impressed with the theatre, not least because of the friendliness and professionalism of the tour guide.

There has been a Theatre on this site since the 17th Century, with the Current building dating from 1906, it a great looking building, you can take guided tours, but my itinerary didn't permit the time, but it was certainty worth a Photo-stop.

A really good value tour which walks you through the public and private areas of this elegant theatre.
The building was not only built to present theatrical productions but, in its hay day, as a place to be seen. There are seeping, plush carpeted, stairways leading to balconies overlooking grand and ornate rooms. As you take the stairs higher up the building, to the seating reserved for the less affluent patrons, the stairs become narrower, the carpet disappears and the experience is altogether lass lavish. Interesting to experience the architectural social demarcation.
Going to the top of the building and walking through the fly tower, with its dizzying views down onto the stage, is fascinating. The auditorium is stunning with its gold sculptural decorations and restored ceiling painting.
The theatre had a chequered history falling into disrepair, becoming a cinema and being renovated. The tour takes you through some of this history as you walk through the building. Text and audio is available in several languages.
The tour lasts 50 mins and costs €5.
