We were visiting Porto as part of our escorted tour with Rail discoveries.
We had a free day and we decided to find the synagague!
We walked for at least 2 hours and finally found it and luckily we were able to visit the museum and the synagague!

We had a wonderful afternoon, learning about the history of the the Jewish community in Porto and the other parts of Portugal.

There is more to see than just this huge synagogue structure, but the synagogue alone is worth the visit, very beautiful and rich in history about Portuguese marranos.
A magnificent and spiritual experience!!!

Had to wait for Hugo to arrive but worth the wait. He was warm and welcoming and very proud of his heritage both Jewish and Portoan! Like all of our guides in Porto he had a healthy "admiration" for those form the south (Lisbon) Great tour of the synagogue and overview of the contemporary Jewish community but a great wealth of knowledge about
the history of the Jews in Spain and Portugal over 500 years. Well worth the visit.

My husband and I, both Jewish, arrived at the synagogue gate at 10:55am on Friday morning. At the time there were over 50 mostly non-jewish people on a tour walking in and out of the synagogue gates. With passports in hand we asked the guard to be let in to see the chapel. We were told we would have to come back after 2 pm in order to be allowed inside. We waited at the gate for another 30 minutes, watching the tour group meander in and out of the synagogue. Shortly after 11am a Jewish couple from France
came to have a look inside and they were summarily turned away. We were all willing to pay the 5 euro entry fee. We left Porto later that morning with a very poor image of the Jews of Porto.

By pre-arrangement, our group was greeted at the synagogue by a young member of the Jewish community of Oporto who is also an historian. The synagogue was erected in the late 1930's by the Kadoorie family. The sanctuary is designed according to Sephardic tradition and is richly appointed. Our guide pointed out that on the High Holy Days there is an Ashkenazi "minyan" in the hall beneath the main floor. The upper level has a women's gallery as well as what was the office of the synagogue rabbi, a classroom and a visual display of the heroes of the discovery of the Anusim - crypto-Jews and their re-emergence as Jews in modern Portugal. Of note is a display of the names of Jews from Porto who were burned at the stake during the Inquisition - including the dates of their martyrdom.

We arrived in the midst of a deluge and the synagogue was closed. As we lingered outside, the docent -- an Israeli -- appeared and offered to take us across the street to the museum and walked us through the exhibits. The history of this synagogue -- funded by Iraqi (?) Jews, and if I recall correctly, completed on the eve of the Holocaust - was an eye opener. He then offered to bring us to the synagogue, as the workmen had left for the day. This synagogue is truly magnificent and a must see.

We hooked up with a group at 230 which seems to be when tours happen.
This is a vibrant synagogue, with a fascinating past.
Visitors are welcome to fri and Saturday service as well as the high holiday.
An important visit for Jewish travellers

We had 8 people off a Duoro River cruise take a privately-arranged Jewish Heritage tour in Porto on July 17th. It was an excellent tour, the highlight being the Synagogue Kaoorie-Mekor Haim. Hugo, the synagogue guide,is also a member. He gave a fantastic overview of the Synagogue and Jewish history in Portugal. He noted the Jewish population of the area is growing again, in part, due to migration from France.

We had an excellent guided tour and thought the synagogue is a magnificent building. The museum upstairs was very interesting and we learnt a lot about Portuguese Jewish history

If you really want to get here then hop off at Casa Da Musica on any metro line (they all pass through here). Head towards the roundabout and take some time to look at the large column commemorating the Penninsular War.

If you have time stop off at the graveyard just off the roundabout because its truly stunning and after viewing this then the synagogue is a few minutes walk down some residential streets. If you see a big Lidl you're close.

The building itself has no real history. Very contemporary and modern it can appeal to people interested in this kind of thing. For myself however it was average at best and I have seen much nicer examples in other places. If it was central i'd say to go and see it but because it is such a trek from the centre I'd recommend to only go see it if you really really wanted to.

The only reason I went to see it is because my apartment was about a 10 minute walk away and even then I was disappointed. Then again beauty is in the eye of the beholder
