This beach, right where one of the main arteries that depart from Porto ends, is worth a visit, you can get to it by municipal buses or by tourist buses that have one of their stops there.
The beach with rocks suffers the onslaught of the ocean waves and one can walk between them to see the show and also crabs and other small animals that hide in them.
On the same beach is the castle of Queijo, an old fortress that guarded the entrance through the Douro to the city of Porto.
It is worth visiting for the views it has and for the Portuguese gift shops that are inside, there is also a small museum with some old weapons and maps
Once the visit is over, I recommend continuing on our way along the Matoshinos beach promenade.

On a bright September day, and the second day of our trip to Oporto, we had a car and driver/guide, to give us an extensive overview of the area. Early on a Monday morning, we parked at Praia do Castelo do Queijo – the Beach at the Cheese Castle. The Cheese Castle is really Forte de São Francisco Xavier a defensive fort was commissioned by King John IV in the mid-1600's, and it still stands “guard” over the beach, bearing it’s more common name Praia do Castelo do Queijo.

The beach is very rocky in many places, but there is also quite a bit of sand. However, one should probably put on shoes, when crossing the rocky sections, as there were some sharp edges.

One neat aspect of our visit was that our guide stopped a couple of clam-diggers, to show us their “catch” of Donax Clams (Conquilhas). They seemed to be in abundance around the rocky outcrops, at the water’s edge.

It was lovely staring our at the vast Atlantic Ocean, and imagining what Portugese navigators thought, as they cast off, on journeys to uncharted territories.

While not busy on this day, we were told that it can get quite crowded, and especially on warm weekends. Other than the clam-diggers, there were few other folk around.

Praia do Castelo do Queijo is a beach located in Montesinho, a town close to Porto. In this beach, you can see a Middle Ages Fortress and obviously, it is possible to bath, sunbath or only relax. Nice place to come with the family, friends or children.

It isn't hard to fall in love with Porto's ocean beaches. But it is hard to find the time to do them all justice. However, for cruise-ship travelers, this stretch of beach is almost ideally located down "Via Castelo do Queijo" (just before the Foz Promenade). It is convenient and the fort makes for a nice exploration opportunity.

Quite a cool little fort with great views of Matosinhos beach & towards Porto. I was charged 50 Euro Cents to go up but a Canadian couple I spoke to outside had to pay $6 Euro each so I'm not sure what that was about - must be ripping some people off.

This beach is on the left as well on the right side of the Fortress, one is a more sandy beach and the other side is plenty of rocks very special but so we have for everybody something, nice location for summer, a bit hard to find a place to park the car, but on this location you can enjoy the fortress, the beach and the park beside.

I go often to Castelo do Queijo beach, mostly for a nice bike trip. The place is great for a lazy Sunday afternoon walk or for a bike ride. The conditions are awesome for bycicles. Right next to the city park, another great place for a picnic or a walk. And then, go to Matosinhos and eat the best fish in Portugal.

However, the beach itself is not so great. Not recommended for a swim or sunbathing, in my opinion. Better go a bit to the north (Labruge, for exemple) or south (Miramar).
