This old jail in the city of Porto, which is located near the “Torre & Igreja dos Clérigos”, is worth a visit. From the jail, its originality was maintained with the characteristics of a jail, which gives nowadays its very special charm, at the place that today functions as the Portuguese Center of Photography. You can enjoy a huge exhibition of a collection of cameras, very interesting. Large building from the end of the century. XVIII, now brings together temporary and other permanent exhibitions.

Free entry so pop in. Grim prison. Huge iron barred gates inside central yard. The large cells are now exhibition halls of photography and must have borne witness to unimaginable horrors. Top floor ( great views of Porto) has any amount of ancient and not so ancient photography kit.

Ms. Khalo was not only an artist but she was a photographer, too. The Portuguese Center of Photography is hosting a show of her work that runs from July 6 to November 4, 2018. Her show is called "Frida Kahlo - Her Photos." Since 1997, the former prison had been given this new use as a photography center.

The building itself is quite distinct: bright yellow upper floors contrast with the drab, gray granite building's body. It actually looks like a prison. It was built in the mid-1700's as a jail. Men, women, and minors were incarcerated here. If an inmate could pay, they had access to the Carmel and St. Joseph Halls (wooden floors was a plus) where the doors weren't locked until night time.

We were relaxing in the paved square outside this building, admiring it, drawn to it by its yellow upper sections, and at the time didn't know what it was. A quick internet check on my phone revealed that it once was a prison. We decided to go in and take a look. This was an interesting visit. Inside the building huge bars remain covering the windows.
It was built in 1767, and as a prison we were quite surprised to learn that it was mixed, housing men, women, and minors. It remained in use as a prison until 1974.

Today, and in fact since 1997, the building has a very different use. It is 'The Portuguese Center of Photography'.

I was hoping to see more of the old prison but unfortunately the upstairs is currently closed for renovation. Anyway the ground floor could be explored for free although its principal service is now for photographic exhibitions.

The "Antiga Cadeia da Relação" functioned previously as a prison for men and women and later on was split to accomodate a Court of Law.
Nowadays it functions as the "Centro Português de Fotografia" (Portuguese Photography Centre) and displays various photography exhibitions and collections (namely, cameras, showing their evolution through time).
It is a very beautiful building in itself, well worth a visit!
