This is a great statue in this resplendent square in the middle of the old Town, half way between the main square & the river.
I didn't realize the importance of this man who, so long ago tried to explore the World.
Amazing fellow.
The buildings surrounding the Square are beautiful.

At some point when exploring Porto you will come across the square that houses the statue to Prince Henry, and it’s worth honouring the old boy with a photo.
I also have a fondness for statues on tall plinths that are pointing. It’s my inner child at work I know, but I always imagine they are shouting down to me “ I can see your house from here “

The main initiator of what would be known as the Age of Discovery. Henry was the fourth child of the Portuguese King John I, who founded the House of Aviz. This beautiful statue was in the middle of a very pleasant square in downtown Porto. I must admit that I stumbled on it by accident after our walking tour of Porto had ended.

This monument was designed by “Tomás da Costa”, and got inaugurated in the year 1900. In it, the Infante appears with a representation of the World at his feet and "indicating" the path of Discoveries. This statue is located near the Ribeira, right in front of the Ferreira Borges Market. And above the underground car-park from “SABA – Ribeira” in the Rua do Infante D. Henrique.

I can remember being taught at school about the role Prince Henry the Navigator played in 15th-century European maritime discoveries and maritime expansion in general. Through his efforts Portugal captured the city of Ceuta in North Africa in 1415, although it is now a Spanish autonomous city. Prince Henry was involved in the Portuguese colonisation of the previously uninhabited island of Madeira.

It is appropriate that this fine looking monument and statue exist in Porto, which we saw from the top deck of a city sightseeing coach, as he was possibly born there; certainly the official records show that he was baptised in the city.

Prince Henry was born in 1394. He is famous for his many maritime discoveries.

He secured significant trade routes for Portugal, making the country the world's major economic power of the time.

The monument was built in 1894 and is located in a park also named after him.

In our tour of the Oporto City Center, our driver/guide took us to the Jardim do Infante Dom Henrique, on Rua do Infante Dom Henrique, and the most imposing aspect was the lovely Statue of Prince Henry the Navigator, for whom the garden/park is named.

The statue is grand, and large, hence it’s imposing nature on this little bit of manicured beauty. It is the centerpiece of the garden, and depicts Dom Henrique pointing toward the Ocean, and standing on a decorated marble column, “the people of Portugal,” depicted as a female figure holding the flag of Portugal, between two horses, rising from what looks like a stormy ocean.

Because of it’s ideal location, near the Mercado and the Palácio da Bolsa, it is easy to walk to from about every area in the City Center.

On this beautiful, sunny September morning, the statue was quite stunning.

This monument by Tomás Costa of the Infante Henrique (Prince Henry the Navigator) was erected 1894. Symbolically it celebrates the Portuguese navigations and Faith of the Discoveries. On top you'll see the statue of the Prince standing next to a globe. And at the base of the monument there is a figure leading two steeds and two tritons and there is a female figure that symbolizes the Faith.

Set on a slightly hilly lawn this monument is quite impressive, though for us the square was more a place we passed on our way. If you don't plan to relax on the grass this might not be the place where you will stop for longer periods to take it all in.
