Beautiful sculpture. The monument is created by sculptor Tomas Costa was made in 1894. It is situated in a small garden, beside Bolsa Palace. It consists of several sculptural groups. The statue in Praca do Infante shows Dom Henrique dressed as a knight, with his right arm outstretched and pointing to the distant overseas lands. In front of the pedestal, we see an allegory for navigation, and on the back, a beautiful figure of faith, both made of bronze. The reliefs, next to the pedestal, show the conquest of Ceuta and Infante on the Sagres promontory. A great spot to chill in the sunshine. People can sit and relax here.

At some point when exploring Porto you will come across the square that houses the statue to Prince Henry, and it’s worth honouring the old boy with a photo.
I also have a fondness for statues on tall plinths that are pointing. It’s my inner child at work I know, but I always imagine they are shouting down to me “ I can see your house from here “

Infante Enrique, son of King Joao I, known as Henry the Navigator, was born in Porto. Where if not here to install a monument to him? A monument dedicated to the 500th anniversary of Henry's death was erected in 1894 on the square next to the house where the infante was born. The author of the monument, Tomas Costa, placed the figure of Enrique on top of a marble pedestal. At the feet of the Navigator is a globe. Interestingly, the idea that the earth has the shape of an ellipsoid of rotation was heretical in the time of Henry the Navigator. It was half a century before the discovery of Copernicus and a century before the voyage of Magellan, which served as indirect evidence. However, two allegorical sculptures symbolizing Faith and Victoria are located at the bottom at the base of the monument. Henry the Navigator was convinced of the need to sail on and on,, and therefore organized more and more expeditions along the coast of Africa to the Cape of Good Hope. The infante himself didn`t participate in them. However, the pedestal is decorated with bas-reliefs on the theme of the Battle of Ceuta, in which Enrique participated in his younger years.

The main initiator of what would be known as the Age of Discovery. Henry was the fourth child of the Portuguese King John I, who founded the House of Aviz. This beautiful statue was in the middle of a very pleasant square in downtown Porto. I must admit that I stumbled on it by accident after our walking tour of Porto had ended.

Beautiful statue of the famous Portuguese explorer Henry the Navigator, famous amongst other things for his unparalleled journeys by ship south along the coast of Africa as far as Cape Bojador when the danger was they could have fallen off the edge of the world as it was flat back then you know!
It's a beautiful statue set on resplendant lawns in front of the Palacio Di Bolsa. Not far from the Ribeira either or the Rua Dos Flores. Definitely well worth tour time, a real piece of history this man.

Prince Henry was born in 1394. He is famous for his many maritime discoveries.

He secured significant trade routes for Portugal, making the country the world's major economic power of the time.

The monument was built in 1894 and is located in a park also named after him.

In our tour of the Oporto City Center, our driver/guide took us to the Jardim do Infante Dom Henrique, on Rua do Infante Dom Henrique, and the most imposing aspect was the lovely Statue of Prince Henry the Navigator, for whom the garden/park is named.

The statue is grand, and large, hence it’s imposing nature on this little bit of manicured beauty. It is the centerpiece of the garden, and depicts Dom Henrique pointing toward the Ocean, and standing on a decorated marble column, “the people of Portugal,” depicted as a female figure holding the flag of Portugal, between two horses, rising from what looks like a stormy ocean.

Because of it’s ideal location, near the Mercado and the Palácio da Bolsa, it is easy to walk to from about every area in the City Center.

On this beautiful, sunny September morning, the statue was quite stunning.
