Clérigos Tower is the foremost undisputed landmark of Porto and a reference in the city's history. Clérigos Tower opened its doors in 1763, becoming the highest bell tower of Portugal, with over 75 metres. In 1753 the Italian architect Nicolau...more

This a a fine structure located in a really interesting little "neighborhood" filled with shops and is close to the shop JK Rowling used as a location for her Harry Potter books. There is a long line to get in it for coffee. We passed...More
The tower is located near the “PORTO” sign. For a small preview you get to enter the museum and go all the way up the tower. It can get crowded once going up the stairs and it gets extremely narrow and you go up higher....More

At €5 per person this viewing point is great value for money. You will have to climb 240 narrow stone steps to get to the top but the uninterrupted views are worth it. You also get to see inside the church and its surrounding rooms.
Climbed the 240 steps on the tiny stairs to get to 360 views of Porto. On the way down, the carillon was playing. When we toured the church, an organist was playing. Don't skip the exhibition on the 2nd floor, it seemed to be the...More
Hi, I will be in Porto with a group of friends in May for 1.5 days and am planning on covering the following sites: Clerigos Tower, Rua de Santa Catrina, Majestic Cafe, Porto Cathedral, and Luis bridge. I see that there is a cable car by the bridge, but I cannot seem to understand where to take it from and where it takes you to. Can someone please clarify that? Is the cable car worth going at sunset? Also, is there anything else I should add/remove from the itinerary? Thanks!

The cable are is a very short run on the Gaia side of the river. It goes from river level, near to where the boats dock for the river cruises, up toward the Luis bridge. It's only a few hundred meters long. I have done it once. One of the things we did do was take the hop on/off bus. There are two routes, one of these routes goes out towards the coast. Also the one hour river cruise is IMO worth it and obviously Port tasting. Hopefully locals will also add ideas.

So far on my list are - Cais de Ribeira, Serralves Museum, Sao Francisco Church, Palacio da Bolsa, Cathedral, Clerigos Tower, Dom Luis Bridge. I don't think we would probably go to all of these, bur wondered if I have missed anything? We like a bit of culture and a few beers! Also any ideas for good and cheap(ish) vegetarian food places? I wondered about going to Espinho beach...More

What is the best time of the day to climb the tower? I read that there can be a 45 min to 1 hour wait!

The best time to visit the tower is early in the morning, but, there are so many tourists in the city, that it is possible you can find some queues
