If you're like me, your introduction to European painting probably came from critics focused on Italian, French, Dutch and Spanish artists. Imagine my surprise when we visited the Museu Nacional de Soares dos Reis, and were introduced to a number of excellent Portuguese painters, especially...More

Beautiful museum, with impressive collection of sculptures by Soares dos Reis. We also had the opportunity of seeing the temporary exhibit on the collector and philanthropist João Allen, which was immense and very informative! A tip for interested travelers: the Quinta de Villar d'Allen (situated...More

Although the internet said it was free - it is only so for permanent residents of Portugal. However, I feel fine about paying €5 to support this hidden gem of a decorative and art museum. It isn’t the biggest museum that I have been to,...More

The staff was not super nice, we almost had to insist to buy tickets. Inside the museum, there is no explanation for any objects. There is not redline and we go from statues to paintings, without any explanation. Disappointed for 5€ a single adult ticket.

Luckily, admission was free. Some of the better works could be in art galleries for sale. Most are at the level of home decorations by a talented family member.

This museum has a good collection of art and sculpture in an interesting building with a pretty garden. It is a short walk out of the city centre.

At a quarter of the cost of the Fundacao Serralves this lovely museum was much more impressive. The staff were friendly and there is a nice cafe and courtyard garden. After some rather dull portraits there is some much more striking artwork on the upper...More
