About
This traditional open-air market first opened its doors in 1837, and remains a historic icon and heart of the city of Porto. The restored and stylish Beaux-art style building houses around 80 traditional stalls and family-run businesses over three floors, selling a variety of fresh produce, fish, meat, and wine, alongside newer coffee shops and restaurants. Beyond food, you can also shop for unique souvenirs like perfume and jewelry from a range of local brands. There are even vendors offering services like knife sharpening. Visit the market along a tapas or walking tour of Porto to learn more about Portuguese street food and culture. – Tripadvisor

    Nice market
The Mercado do Bolhão is one of the typical places in Porto. It's a two-story covered market with a wide variety of shops and small eateries. I suppose it used to be a local market a long time ago, but now it's a tourist market. The vast majority of shops sell items geared towards tourists (oils, canned sardines, wines, etc.).

    Disappointing
I was excited to visit this market but honestly, I was a little disappointed from the offerings. Most of the stalls sell the same things – olive oil, produce, cheese, salted cod, and a few stands selling ‘fresh’ seafood. I guess I thought there would be more eats around but the eats that were available looked like they had been sitting out all day. My advice? Come to talk a loop around to just check it out but if you want a snack/food, head across the street to Confeitaria de Bolhao.

    Enjoyable, beautiful, delectable foods.
Food selection, location, variety of foods (pastries, sandwiches, cheese plates, meats, sampler plates, candy, beans, fruit, plants, flowers, coffee, chocolate, drinks, wines, misc, and more). They have everything you need. Vendors REALLY take pride in their products. So clean, no awful smells, friendly. Wish this was everywhere.

    Go hungry!
This is a beautiful building in the centre of Porto. Very easy to find and free entry. Beautiful cut flowers, meats, cheeses, olives, fruit, sardines…..and wine! I bought a fruit cup for €3.50, wine for €2, my sister bought a cheese plate for €5. Would highly recommend.

The best indoor market I have ever been to.
This is without doubt the very best indoor market I have ever visited. It is new, fresh, clean, organised, exciting, and fantastic. Lots of offerings from fruit, vegetables, salted cod fish, cheeses, chocolates, fruits, oils, wines, juices, etc etc. all under one roof. The market is on three floors with top floor located for various restaurants and the public toilets (sanitarios) again very clean. Second floor a gallery area to look down on market and the ground floor is the market. We got freshly made drilled vegetable focaccia sandwiches then some Douro Valley wines and sat in the sunshine on the steps. All very peaceful and many people did the same with a local singer/guitarist playing soulful music. This is a must place to visit to have lunch but go around 11.30 am as they sell out quickly!

    Mercado do Bolhau
Recently refurbished, it's definitely a handy place for a snack or glass of wine during the day. Most of the stalls now seem to be aimed at the tourist market. It seems to have lost its soul a little from when we first visited the admittedly slightly run down market a few years ago, where there were several inexpensive cafes where you could get local fish etc. And the stalls seemed to be aimed more at the locals. Still, progress, I suppose.......

Think Borough market with less grit
Porto’s central market is a must-visit when touring the city. One can happily meander through the stalls for 1-2 hours and peruse row after row of delicacies for both stomach and home. Hungry? Sample small plates of sardines, urchin, tuna tartare, cheese, pasta, charcuterie or fresh oysters etc. There are loads of options and to wash all that food down, you can sip lovely Douro wines. Looking for fresh cut flowers, plants, tableware or linens - you can find those in abundance too. The market is clean, well lit and sensibly laid out w plenty of washrooms at your disposal. After visiting this place you’ll leave w a lighter wallet but much happier.

    good market
Open market, restored, with covered stall area and upper catering floor, with elevator. The exterior façade is very striking. In the center are the fruit, vegetable, meat and fish stalls. On both sides they have wine, tapas and craft stalls. Very good prices for tapas, wines, beer, they have high tables at the entrance.

    Great value and delicious!
This is a fantastic market to buy fresh produce and also sample delicious foods from either the stalls down below or the sit down restaurants on the upper floor. Such a friendly vibe and great value for money. Highly recommend anyone stop here during their trip to Porto.

Great (mainly under cover) market.
Very clean and lots of variety with very reasonable prices.
We did some Port tasting (and buying!) at the Casta D'ouro (stall B24) and the ladies there were very friendly and welcoming.
We also bought lots of tinned mackerel from the large stall (numbers 77-78-92-93). They allowed us to taste some before we bought (price factored into your purchase).
Again very friendly stall holders.

We wish we had come into this market before buying from the Comer e Chorar Por Mais shop (on the same street) as the port in the market was considerably cheaper...

Shame we weren't in self catering accommodation because there were some lovely fish/seafood and meat stalls, as well as some fabulous vegetable and fruit stalls.

Lots of cafe/snack stalls so you could eat + drink there too.

I loved this market. We were staying nearby and it became our go to for reasonably priced provisions. There's fresh fruit salad, smoothies, freshly made sandwiches to take away, a myriad of dried fruit and nuts - basically everything you need under one roof to create a delicious and cheap meal. Colourful, friendly, clean and bustling.

I expected more from this market, but perhaps its temporary location hinders its potential.

It was half-closed when I visited and paid €6 for two bananas, two kiwis (both domestic), and grenadilla from Colombia at a fruit stall on the lower level. I'm not sure if these prices are typical of Porto or whether these are tourist prices but I would buy my produce elsewhere. There were also warm juices being sold for €2 which could have been more refreshing if more care was given to its temperature.

A quick stroll through the market should suffice based on what I saw, but will revisit as I am so close by, and hopefully the rest of the market will be open.

I have been here for lunch and I chose a place called "ARI CAFE" that sells various deserts and sandwiches. They have prices of all products listed next to the products offered but once I ordered a sandwich that was supposed to be 3 Euro the guy asked me to pay 6 Euro. I understand I could have asked for the price again before ordering the sandwich but when you are on vacation you simply want to enjoy your time and do not want to do this all the time... I did not expect Portuguese people to be this dishonest, I would definitely not come back, this market seems to be just a rip-off for tourists...

Returned after 8 months away and a lot of the market prices have gone up 20%. Not sure why except they’re cashing in on the tourist trade.

The stalls used more by locals (vegetables/butchers/one cheese stall) are islands of value compared to what surrounds them. If these stores relent to the upward price pressure and get absorbed into the tourist gravy train the market will lose its local customers.

I sincerely hope not.

While I respect local views on this venue (was not charmed by the upper floor), I had restaurant quality carpaccio, seafood skewers and cheese selections at incredible prices way below UK levels. And that's before we move onto the smoothies, beers and wines sampled too (2.5 - 3.5 euros per drink). Maybe I'm greedy but the 3-glass port flight was a winner at 6 euros (and very generous too). Even if you are health-conscious, the dried fruit packs were very tasty too (dragon-fruit was surprisingly good). Enjoy!

We found this market to be an extremely clean and pleasant market offering a wide choice of goods for both locals and visitors. We were particularly taken by the large range of canned sardines and pates available and in fact purchased a number to bring home. The top quality produce was well packaged and presented making suitable welcome gifts to take back home. It is also a good place to stop by for a glass of wine and to sample the food on offer. Prices were reasonable for the quality of the merchandise.

If you come here looking for the historic Porto market of the same name, prepare to be disappointed. The old market has been torn down and in its place is a modern, sanitized food hall of the kind you'll find in many other cities. You won't find any locals shopping here for fresh fish or produce — just hordes of tourists taking pictures of cheese and overpaying for below average food.

The Bolhao Market is a MUST if you are visiting Porto. It is vibrant, well laid out, great spot to pick up LOCAL produce, sauces, etc. The vendors are so friendly, knowledgeable and full of info. We had great interactions and conversations with multiple vendors and we met a nice mix of newer vendors as well as the 'old guard'. Visit Bolhao for a true figurative and literal taste of Porto.
