One of the finest churches in Porto, also called St. Catherine Chapel, built in the 18th century. The building itself is rather neoclassical but what stands out is clearly the 16,000 azulejo tiles that show scenes from the lives of St. Francis of Assisi and St. Catherine. Truly amazing! Next to the chapel is a nice two floor bell tower. The interior is also very beautiful with stained glass windows and a nice altarpiece. Unlike large churches, you get a more intimate feeling of presence when you visit this chapel.

Azulejos - world known Portugal's blue and white tiles decorate many Churches, squares, metro stations,...you name it.
Here, at the Chapel of Souls, they're at their best - the entire front and side facades are covered with them framed by old stone work, depicting Biblical scenes and local saints. It's a feast for eyes and your camera - a must visit Church.
The interiors are also nice, yet not that decorated like we saw in many others. Here, the main star is the outstanding exterior.

Capela das Almas or Chapel of Souls (Chapel of Santa Catherina) is a very beautiful neoclassical church of 18th century in Lisbon with tiled walls (16.000 azulejo blue and white tiles) depicting religious scenes from the lives of Saint Catherine and Saint Francis of Assisi. There is also a nice 2-storey bell tower to admire. The interior is also very beautiful and over the main altar there is a large painting devoted to “the Ascension of the Lord”. This is one of the most beautiful churches in Lisbon and certainly it is worth visited.

The chapel was closed, so they didn't get inside, but they weren't too upset... The life of Francis of Assisi on the Azuleju tiles is beautiful visible from the outside since 1929. The artist Eduardo Leita needed 15,947 tiles, covering about 360 square meters, to depict the vicissitudes of the life of the founder of the Franciscan order. The tiles themselves were made by the Fábrica de Cerâmica Viúva Lamego factory in Lisbon. Great job! I have not seen such a colorful biography of a medieval saint, even in his homeland in Assisi, Italy.

The facade and side of the church are incredible, with several blue tiles, very Portuguese and that tell the story of São Francisco de Assis and Santa Catarina. Is a beautiful spot to visit in Porto, right next door there is also the Church of Santo Idelfonso, all in baroque art and with blue tiles too.
Be sure to visit.

Built back in the 18th century was restored and extended in 1801. In the 19 century the intricate blue design tiles were then laid on the outside walls. Inside, the altars are Neoclassical style and the have an 18th century image of Our Lady of Souls. Incredible architecture.

The exterior of this church is truly fabulous- the blue azulejo tiles cover the facade and make the building really stand out. Simply stand and admire. The interior by comparison is rather disappointing.

Small, but beautiful church, located at Rua de Santa Catarina. Free entrance. It's covered by beautiful, amazing blue tiles, typical for Portugal, "azulejos". Worth to see it.

For those who are not Catholic and are just looking for an attraction, yes, this will be a place to snap a quick picture from the intersection. However, sit for a Mass (service), even if you don't understand the language. It is the most spiritual and peaceful environment with amazing architecture. Please check their website for tour information and Mass schedule as they do not do tours during service times. Enjoy your experience!

This is one of the more beautifully tiled churches on the outside. It's not very big inside.

Try to see it during both the day and at night when its lit up as it photographs very well at both times.

Its right next to the Bolhao metro exit.
