It is widely believed that this was JK Rowling’s inspiration for Gryffindor’s lion. But maybe this was the inspiration for Buckbeak, the large, winged creature from the movie called Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban? It's an easily accessible statue in Porto - it's free and in the open air. It's very close to Livraria Lello.Visited April 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten March 31, 2024

The fountain that was not built here, is one of the symbols of the city. Its construction began in 1882 and was completed four years later, with the aim of providing drinking water to this part of the city. The Fonte dos Leões is currently a meeting point for students, tourists and residents.Visited June 2024Traveled with friendsWritten June 27, 2024

It's not only beautiful but as I read before, the fountain brought clean water to this part of Porto. So not only beautiful but significant for public health at that time. Nearby are two wonderful churches, university and famous Livraria Lello.Visited September 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten November 10, 2024

One of my favorite parts of town, this charming big fountain that seems to always have a lot of water flowing. It has a graceful design and is set in an important square in front of the University and near the Carmo church.

It is such a cool fountain near the two joint, but not joint churches and the old university building. When I visited it looked freshly painted, they probably just finished the restoration because I've seen pictures where it is not so bright. To be honest, as much as I like the color of it, it looks a bit weird in its actual surroundings.

We just had a quick drive-by but this was still an interesting fountain. I wish that we had more time on our Viking River cruise tour to see this area better.

The Fountain of the Lions Gomes dominates the centre of Teixeira Square. Made of cast iron, it has three overlapping cups, increasing in size from top to bottom, supported by a main pillar and surrounded by four winged lions, spewing water.

This stunning monument was built in 1886 by a French company for the public water supply.
It is 8 meters in diameter and 6 meters high. There are four winged lions sitting under the two circular cups.

From the late 1870s, it's a lovely addition to the open square. Even though it is described as of Lions, the figures also resemble the mythical creature griffin.
Highly ornate, a number of containers ascend to an exquisite pinnacle. Water emanates from each of the four creatures and from the largest of the cups.
