This statue next to the Porto Cathedral was erected in 1968 honors Vimara Peres, the first Count of Portugal and ruled from 868-873. He was a nobleman from the Kingdom of Asturias and is considered to be the first ruler of the County of Portugal. He also founded the city of Guimarães, the first capital of Portugal. This is actually a quite impressive statue and well worth a closer look

He is called the father of Portuguese statehood by Portuguese historians. After defeating the Moors, Vimara Peres declared himself the 1st Count of Portugal in 868. A lot of time passed before Portugal was founded in the 12th century. However, the first symbol of Portuguese statehood is Vimara Peres. His monument is an armed figure on horseback located in front of the Se Cathedral. You can't imagine a better place.

Bronze statue on a stone pedestal, made by Barata Feyo, in 1968, placed in the Calçada de Vandoma, next to the Cathedral.
The Count of Vímara Peres, originally from Galicia, took Portugal from the Moors in 868 and was reportedly killed in 873 in the city of Guimarães. Vímara Peres began the era of definitive Christian rule in the Porto region, which was always an integral part of the Kingdom of Portugal.

Estatua de Vimara Peres is an interesting equestrian monument to a Portuguese legendary figure. It is located about half way up on your right, as you walk towards the Se Cathedral. It is quite an imposing statue and is dedicated to Peres who is said to have led his people against the Moors, in the 9th century, and retook the city from them.

The author of the monument to Vimar Peres was the sculptor Salvador Barata Feyo, the author of many monuments and busts to kings, politicians and travelers. Why was the monument to Vimar Peres installed in 1968 near the cathedral? The origin of Vímara Peres is not exactly established, but the name has Visigothic roots. Vímara Peres became the founder and first ruler of the county of Portugal from 868 to 873. It is hard to believe, but in those days these lands were no man's land and neglected. He occupied and mastered the Portus Calais, captured and destroyed by Abdul-Aziz ibn Musa as early as 716, but by this time abandoned by the Moors. Therefore, during the dictatorship of Salazar, a monument was erected to him as the founder of the new Christian Porto. The shape of the monument is not random. The founder of the city is depicted with the banner of the King of Asturias, who owned the land. Those who begin to colonize the land (pressura) must blow the horn and unfurl the royal banner.

Within the grounds of the cathedral stands a proud equestrian statue, of a portuguese nobleman who was involved in the Reconquista, the banishment of the moors.

It’s just a “man on a horse” statue - but he is very significant historically as he rescued the Portuguese from the Moors only to turn them into Northern Spanish subjects! So interesting in that respect.

After visiting Sé do Porto Cathedral, we paused a bit, to enjoy the Estátua de Vímara Peres, on the edge of the grounds. The statue is a tribute to the first ruler of Portugal. I had read about his efforts in the “Reconquista,” or re-conquest in taking back much of Spain and Portugal from the Moors. Our driver/guide filled in many more details, and stated that many considered Peres to be the “father of Portugal,” and hence the placement of his statue at the Cathedral.

On this beautiful mid-September day, we studied this work of art, depicting a 9th Century knight on horseback, holding the battle colors on a lance. The knight (Peres) and his horse are bronze, while the base is local granite. As the statue and Cathedral sit atop a hill, much of the city of Oporto spreads out below him – a very fitting tribute.

I would definitely spend a bit of time visiting this statue, and especially if visiting the near-by Cathedral.
