I love this area of the Cathedral! It is so ample and lovely. It offers stairs to go to the pier area of Porto where you can eat and catch a boat! Cone and see for yourself! And visit the Cathedral please!! It is just amazing, and the tower look out lovely too! See my other reviews in Porto for more information! I am here for two weeks this time!

This is a very interesting monument in the middle of the square in front of the cathedral. Legend says you can still see the hooks from where people were hanged.

We saw this post when visiting the top of this hill, where the Se Cathedral sits. There is a large open space outside the cathedral, and this Pillory post stands right in the middle, providing great photo opportunities for tourists. In reality it is a rather newish installation, having been installed there by the local authorities in the 1940s, after they cleared the area of housing and other buildings that had been there for centuries. Apparently the real pillory was built during the 15th century and was installed in the Ribeira area, but was destroyed in the 18th century, as it symbolised oppression and people did not want it! Worth a look anyway. And the views from the square are fantastic.

The area around the Cathedral until 1940 had medieval housing that was demolished to make way for the open space that is there now.The obelisk was erected in 1945 although there is little reference to what it is or why. You do get great views from this high point across Porto and it is interesting to walk down to the narrow alley ways below the cathedral for a look at what old Porto was like.

On the grounds of the Sé do Porto Cathedral, atop a hill, overlooking much of Oporto, stands an odd “monument,”Pelourinho Sé Cathedral Porto – a gallows column. We were studying this column, when our driver/guide asked if we knew what we were looking at. Well, no. Not really. “Well,” he said, “that is what you would call a pillory – a gallows.”

He went on to explain how it was used, and pointed out the two “arms” atop the spindly column. Those, condemned to die, were hoisted high up the column. This act of execution could be seen by many gathered in the courtyard, but also many down the hill, in the homes, which surround the Cathedral. Their bodies left dangling, until decomposed.

While now a morbid thought, such was not always so, and especially for “enemies of the church.”

This statue, column, monument, whatever you wish to term it, is historically significant, and also a reminder of how gruesome punishment could have been, 300 years ago.

After contemplating the Pelourinho, spend some time taking in the views from the courtyard, in which it sits. Think of this column as just a small part of Sé do Porto Cathedral, and include it into a bigger site.

The large square in front of Porto Cathedral was built during the Middle Ages, and this is where we discovered the pillory. The ornately carved twisting stone pillory is called a pelourinho by the Portuguese. The pillory we see today is a reconstruction of a 1797 engraving and was inaugurated in 1945.
This was a nice area to spend some time at, and be sure to check out the lovely views from 'Terreiro da se' (Terrace of the Cathedral) when visiting the pillory or cathedral.

It is a statue in front of the cathedral made of stone, looks cool because it is swirled and not a regular plain one and there are always a lot of people around it.

That is located in the grounds of the cathedral, that has a dark past, it was once used as a punishment pillar, these days a meeting place and a nice place to hang out.

Apparently this is a punishment pillar and it dates from the 18th century. Most days you will find tourist taking a rest at its base and listening to the buskers playing music close by.

This post is similar to those found outside other public spaces in old cities. I guess it was used for punishment. Here it is just curious, and next to the big Cathedral.
