The most significant attraction of Lamego is the sanctuary located in a scenic position on the hill just outside the centre, but if you are passing through it is a good idea to also include a visit to the ancient cathedral, perhaps not among the most significant in Portugal but of good interest.
The facade is probably the most interesting part, having kept its Gothic character almost unchanged, with the deep and elaborate portals that stand out on the quiet square in front. Inside, the renovations, especially in Baroque style, have somewhat altered the original character of the building; the cloister, so as not to lack any style, is instead of Renaissance style with some rich chapels in "talha dourada". Unlike in many other Portuguese and Spanish cathedrals, access, long live God, is free and free.

When you are visiting the city of Lamego, you cannot miss a visit of the cathedral, because this is the place where the Marian cult was instituted in the year 1175. The façade and interior are integrating architectural styles from different periods.
The first reference to the bishopric of Lamego dates from the year 572. They started the building of the cathedral that exists today in the year 1159, this on an old chapel dedicated to São Sebastião, erected a few decades earlier.
At the beginning of the 15th century, the cathedral underwent an important renovation.
So do not miss that visit, it is worth it.

Located right downtown, near the museum and restaurants. There is the cathedral and the cloister to explore.
The cathedral name is Our Lady of the Assumption and is a Catholic Church build in the Gothic style with many modifications. The cloister is the Renaissance style. There are arches around the rose garden.
The diocese of Lamego was established in 570.
I found the ceiling decorations to be especially attractive.

We climbed the 686 steps to reach the Santuario Nossa Senhora dos Remedios. At the top we rested, had coffee and icecream. Sat outside the church to catch our breath and listened to the church bells (a local said they were recordings), sounded just as magical and real to us. Then we popped into the little shop run by the nuns (who spoke English and Portuguese) and we bought some souvenirs. If you want to climb the steps, take it nice and slow and rest now and then. Lots of beautiful picture ops on the way up and beautiful tiles and fountains.

Well signposted. Plenty of free parking. Large group of American tourists in. Fabulous building steeped in history. Ample signage in English. Guide was very miserable, obviously having a bad day. But it didn’t spoil the visit. A must if visiting the area.

Built some 8 centuries ago, this is a beautiful place to visit. In the heart of Lamego, it is amazing to consider how long ago this place was stood here. Be quiet as you look through.

Situated at the heart of the city, this church has a rich history dating back to the 12th century. Although there are extensive renovations taking place it is well worth a visit with impressive painted ceilings and artefacts.

I always give at least €5 for donations when the entrance to churches are free because I want to keep it that way for everyone and also as a sign of appreciation for the care takers! It is such a beautiful church! You must all visit when in Lamego 🙏🏼 My hostel was the best and steps from it "Host'olaria"
