About
QUINTA DA PACHECA Nearly three hundred years old, Quinta da Pacheca is one of the Douro’s most renowned estates where worldwide awarded wines are produced. One of the first to bottle wine under its own brand, Quinta da Pacheca has always valued traditions, having one of the few 18th century’s remaining milestones, used in the original Pombal’s 1756 world’s first wine region demarcation. With 140 acres along and sloping down to the Douro River, the property is mentioned in an April 1738’s document as “Pacheca”, owned by Lady Mariana Pacheco Pereira. In 1903, by the hand of its new owner, the noble Jose Freire de Serpa Leitao Pimentel, the wine production significantly increased. The vineyards were then renewed and varieties were arranged by fields. The estate was again refurbished in 1916 and new warehouses were built. Eight imposing granite wine presses or “lagares” were then constructed and continue in use today, for the vinification Pacheca’s wines, under the advice of winemaker Maria Serpa Pimentel and agronomist Hugo Fonseca, for the vinification of Pacheca’s wines, for limited annual production of Douro DOC wines and special categories of Port Wines only. Maria do Ceu Goncalves and Paulo Pereira bought the estate in 2012, starting a new era of expansion and vitality.

- AishaBristol, United Kingdom10 contributionsExcellent stayWe had a wonderful stay at Hotel Pacheca and would highly recommend this hotel to all our family and friends. The staff at the hotel were just wonderful- so polite and accommodating. We are offered complimentary wine tasting which was a nice treat. The food and wine were excellent with exceptional service. I had the trilogy massage outside and I have never felt so relaxed. Beautiful experience and I will be coming back for more.Visited October 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 5, 2023
- Catherine L28 contributionsLovely wine resortThis is one of the most beautiful resorts I have ever visited. However the staff's aloofness kept me from giving a five star rating. I was told you have to schedule gym time but I almost never saw anyone there. We did the wine tour but it was average. It was interesting to sleep in wine barrels but the quarters were tight. The high point may have been the fantastic bartender who advised us they make everything from scratch. He was always pleasant and made fantastic cocktails. There was a wine restaurant we went to across the Douro and it was very good. Indoor/outdoor seating & adjacent to the train tracks. Pacheca has a lovely pool but it is cold.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 17, 2023

So glad he did as it was the perfect conclusion to an excellent day. The complex is historic buildings and landscape are stunning. The tour was informative and detailed and ended with a stop in their shop. The star of the visit was their restaurant and our incredible lunch so definitely make plans to have a meal here.Visited June 2023Traveled with friendsWritten January 4, 2024

The dinner and breakfast at the restaurant is amazingly good. Unforgettable trip to the winery! The only downside is the soundproofing wasn't good enough and therefore you will hear noises when your neighbors are loud.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten January 17, 2024

- icklebluefairyLondon, United Kingdom60 contributionsThe Flamour tour is out of this worldI’ve wanted to stay in the barrels for some time now so we visited for my husband’s birthday and also organised to do the new ‘Flamour’ experience. Fabio and Piedro were brilliant hosts during our stay. Totally blew us away. We started with a tour of the vineyard and a tasting of their two top wines before heading in for the most stunning lunch of local food cooked over flames. As it was raining we had a private table in a Lagar! We then blended our own bottles of port which was brilliant! We rounded off the afternoon with tea made from herb infusions from the Quinta. After the best night sleep in our barrel and a visit from the resident peacock, we continued our experience with the most freshly fragrant spa experience. The experience finished with a five course dinner in the private cellar with more wine from the estate and some extra surprises thrown in. Every little detail had really been thought through. We made such special memories we will treasure forever. No trip to the Douro Valley should be complete without a trip to Quinta Da PachecaVisited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 1, 2024
- BellaFromLAMarina del Rey, California518 contributionsWonderful experience staying in a wine barrelWe stayed in the Touriga Nacional barrel and had the greatest experience at this hotel. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed and treated well. The beds are extremely comfortable, view of the vineyard from the barrel are lovely and the staff here is wonderful and helpful. They also have the friendliest dog named Pacheco who comes by in the mornings for some bacon and belly rubs. We had food delivered to the barrel once and it was so much food, we felt bad wasting so much of it.Visited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten May 15, 2024
- lovetravelanytime130 contributionsBeautiful wineryWe had a wonderful host for our tasting. He did a great job of describing the winery and processes, as well as the lovely tasting. The property is gorgeous and their wines/ports were delicious. It would have been nice to have the option to taste some of the higher end ports & wines, but they weren't part of the tasting.Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 12, 2024
- Josephine G23 contributionsAmazing!!!!Such a unique experience. We had a wonderful stay in the wine barrel. Very comfortable. The weather was beautiful which made for an extra perfect stay. A bottle of bubbles and some extra little treats. Beautiful attention to detail. Deck chairs, sun beds and privacy amongst the grape vines. Our dinner at the restaurant was amazing, breakfast was beautiful. Wonderful friendly happy staff. Wine tour was amazing, our guide was brilliant and very informative. The pool and total environment of this property is perfection. Definitely a must in the Douro Valley. My only regret, I wish we had stayed two nights. Simply amazing!!!!!😀Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 30, 2024
- GarrettBelle Vernon, Pennsylvania3 contributionsThe most wonderful place, ever! All I can say is...WOW! We were treated like royalty from the moment we stepped onto the property. This hotel was a small taxi ride from the train station and had the most beautiful views I have ever seen. We stayed in the wine barrels on the property and these did not disappoint. We booked our stay in November 2023 for a Black Friday deal for June 2024 and this was so worth it! We got dinner, wine tasting, a HUGE breakfast delivered to us in bed, and so much more. This stay was worth every single penny we spent on it. There were peacocks, an amazing swimming pool, the best Port, and the views! I cannot say enough good things about this place. I would give 100 stars if I could!!Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten July 4, 2024

Did a wine tasting at this establishment in combination with a picnic lunch at the recommendation of our travel guide. After a short showing of the vats and a cellar, we sat down to select wines for the tasting. The host let us know that the total cost would be120 euros, including lunch and the tasting. Because we were two adults and a 12 year old, I asked for a breakdown of the tasting cost vs the luncheon cost, because that seemed high for a picnic lunch and expecting that the 12 year old’s tasting price would be lower. We were told that the price was 40 euros each and it was a bundled price, meaning no breakdown of food vs. wine could be given. When the 12 year old asked if he could have a kid’s drink while we tasted wine, he was told that only water was available.
After a nice wine and water tasting, we went for the picnic lunch. I should mention that in arranging our tour some weeks earlier, our guide asked whether we wanted a restaurant lunch at the winery or a “picnic” lunch. I chose the latter because we wanted a lighter lunch in expectation of a bigger dinner in the evening. We were dumbfounded to find that the picnic lunch came in three large baskets holding a dozen plus boxes, more than enough food for 6 people, let alone three. Although the food was excellent, the amount was simply ludicrous. In addition, now included were the juice and lemonade kids’ drinks that were not possible to provide earlier.
Upon returning to our hotel we checked the winery website and found that, indeed, 12 year olds do have a lower price for the tasting and picnic lunch (see photo) and there also is a price for tasting without lunch.
So we give this establishment 1 star for not being forthright about pricing, for not offering a kid’s drink when they clearly were available, for overcharging for the child, and for providing and making us pay for well over twice the food needed, later to be thrown away.
My advice: choose another winery. There are many of them whom I suspect might treat their customers with greater respect.

the wines were mediocre, the bottle price offered at the winery lofty, so I checked online while at the tasting to find that the same wines could be bought for less than 1/2 the price at bottles shops in Lisbon. The tour was long, and boring. Whereas the guide spoke perfect English he was more interested in droning, hearing himself talk offering a pompous rather than an enjoyable commentary. And it was difficult to hear the speaker whose voice echoed of the concrete vaulted cellar of the winery where he chose to talk. Was appalled to learn later from my son that we were charged close to $100 for tour, 4 wines samples, 3 people sampling . 4 year old granddaughter was charged E7.00, all she got was access to the bathroom.

We booked a stay at the quinta da pacheca with one room in the modern part and one wine barrel. The modern room has a nice price-performance, the wine barrel is rather expensive but of course it is a nice experience. Staff was really friendly and helpful at reception and also the blond curly girl who took us on a wine tasting tour through the pacheca. Tasting area is impressive, ports are good. Dinner was very formal and the mood was little bit of uncomfortable. Also there was a family with a baby boy who got a tablet with a movie to watch - very disturbing because of the volume, but none of the 4 waiters said anything. It looked like the family owns the pacheca or they are very familiar with them. Food was okay but nothing was outstanding, even it was expensive for the portuguese pricing level.

We visited this Quinta on the advice of a friend. They have quite a tourist operation here, with the hotel with the barrel shaped rooms, the fancy restaurant, and the wine-tasting. When we arrived we asked to do a wine tasting but were told they were sold out with tours. So we asked if we could have lunch at the restaurant but were told they were totally booked. This wasn't true as our friend bumped into a tour guide acquaintance there and he somehow got us a reservation. The restaurant was by far the most expensive we ate at in Portugal, and the service was spotty. No one refilled our water glasses during the entire meal. The food was quite good. We found the atmosphere at this Quinta very stuffy and supercilious. If you pulled up in a Mercedes or a Rolls-Royce they were quite attentive, if not, they couldn't be bothered accommodating you. There are many other Quintas in the Douro region that are less expensive and more welcoming, like Quinta das Carvalhas in Pinhao. Unless you are a stuffy rich person I'd give this one a miss.

We ended our vacation in Portugal at the Quinta. My spouse found the hotel while doing our initial investigations of the area and immediately fell in love with the idea of sleeping in the barrel rooms.
What a lovely experience, though be forewarned, there is no real privacy as it comes to the bathroom because it's just a simple glass door that separates the bedroom from the bathroom. However, it didn't spoil our experience. All depends on the level of intimacy you have with the person your sharing the room with.
Putting that aside, we absolutely loved our time at the Quinta. The location, the views, the people, the wine, the food, the Spa. Everything not only met but exceeded our expectations.
The first morning we had breakfast delivered to the barrel. The breakfast was generous and very delicious. It included crepes and pancakes, scrambled eggs, bacon, assorted fruits, pastries, fresh OJ and coffee. And of course as my spouse notes, Nutella.
One evening we had dinner at Casa do Alambique, which is one of the restaurants at the Quinta. The food and staff were both awesome.
My spouse utilized the Spa a couple of times and has nothing but praise for Frederico, the manager as well as Jessica, the masseuse. After spending over a week walking in Lisbon and Porto, her feet and legs appreciated the care given by them.
We also did a wine tour and tasting which was presented by Hugo. You could feel the passion he has for not only the Quinta but also the whole Douro region. He also emphasized how much they appreciate their guests and how tourism as revitalized the region.
Everyone that we interacted with at Pacheca was warm and helpful. This started before we even visited the location, as we contacted them about recommendations for a car service back to Lisbon. The business they recommended, Alcides Pereira, was great! We used them for different day trips and the primary driver we had, Maria, was a sweetheart.
We didn't utilize the pool but would have, if it had been available earlier in the morning before 10:00 am. We are early risers and would have loved to have taken an early morning dip. However, later in the day, it was always quite busy.
There was something calming about waking early and walking around the property, which included a number of peacocks and area Quinta dogs that would visit.
Would we stay in the barrels again, maybe not, though it was an unforgettable experience, it was a bit tight, but would we stay here again? Absolutely.

My wife and I did the “ harvest experience “. What a great time we had! You might think it would be hokey and touristy but it was great fun. Carla and Filipa are great guides, breakfast and lunch were marvellous and grape picking a d stomping were fun. Our group started as strangers but after so much wine tasting, we were all friends who will continue to see each other. Highly recone t the experience as well as a stay at the Quinta

We had a great great stomping experience at Quinta da Pacheca. The tour was very well run and we got to do a tasting of different wines and ports from the Quinta before the actual grape stomp. Our host was lots of fun and the actual grape stomping was a great experience - yes those grapes will be wine or port one day. We also walked around the Quinta which has beautiful grounds as well as a nice tasting room and a restaurant. We highly recommend the grape stomp but visiting the Quinta regardless.

It was a great stay at Quinta da Pacheca. Our wine tasting (every guest gets one!) was a great experience - we thought of a short, 30 mins long tasting, instead we got a small tour around the estate, we saw the port barrels (!) and we had a very diverse tasting: this was the only place where we could taste and compare a ruby with a tawny. Their vintage ruby was phenomenal, from 2019, we ordered one bottle later. The guide spoke excellent English (better than us) and also was very kind, had a great sense of humour, too. Afterwards we tried their restaurant, the cuisine was great, even though the place was elegant, high-end restaurant, the waiters were all kind and helpful, we did not feel uncomfortable. All in all I will definitely recommend Quinta da Pacheca to all of my friends!

Whilst the wines and port are excellent there are huge duty and vat charges if you order or send to UK. These were massively ramped in 2023 and Revenue have patently been sharper about charging them. Without payment the wines cannot be delivered. Basically vat at 20% is levied on the cost then duty is added and then, ludicrously vat is charged on the duty!

We arrived early for our tour and lunch at Quinta da Pacheca. This was a good thing - it allowed us to walk through the misting tunnel and then to stroll through the vineyards with new friends we made on the spot. We were accompanied on our walk by an accommodating and apparently well known local dog that happily strolls the grounds. The land and vineyards are lovely, with stone walls and roses planted among the grapes to act as early warnings for any pests that might affect the crop.
We returned for our tour - this was fairly brief but did feature a visit to the concrete enclosures where they literally stomp the grapes for their wine production. We enjoyed our wine tasting and then, after a short respite, went upstairs in the main building to enjoy lunch.
Lunch was truly spectacular - delicious food with excellent wine pairings in a room with floor to ceiling windows to allow us to see the quinta and Douro Valley beyond. I thoroughly enjoyed the cod tongues appetizer and sea bass entree along with the dessert and coffee to finish. Well work the visit!

Hello, how many km is the airport please ??
Written May 4, 2020
I would think less than two hour drive. We hit some wineries inbetween and spent the night in Amarante which is a cute town with a Michelin Star Hotel & Restaurant. It is easy driving so relax.

Hello, do you offer grape stomping along with wine tours? I am traveling end of September. If yes, what is the price and how do we reserve? Thank you.
Written September 11, 2019
I understand that the Quinta offer opportunities for people to participate in the grape harvesting and then "stomping of the grapes" during the month of September. I think people are expected to actually work rather than "play at it". I would suggest contacting the Quinta direct about such opportunities.

Do they have US outlets in the hotel rooms?
Written August 13, 2019
Therer is an airport just outside of Oporto but if you plan a trip down the Douro Valley you will probably need to hire a care as public transport would appear to be very limited. Some of the hotels e.g. Six Senses have their own cars / drivers but it can be expensive for the 120km trip.
Written June 20, 2019
On the website they have the option to book barrels. However, they do book up quite in advance. You can also email and see if any are open for your stay.

Written February 1, 2019
Alternatively, you could get a train to Peso de Regua and then grab a cab from there - it is a 5-10 minute drive (or a ½ hour walk across the bridge and then to the right just behind the big Sandeman sign).
