“not just a lovely chapel”
The chapel of São Pedro de Balsemão is located in a small plain along the Balsemão river banks. Although the chapel is now part of a seventeenth century manor, its interior still preserves 10th century traits, namely Mozarabic Iberian architecture...more

This little chapel is very quaint. A lovely woman gave us a small "tour" and even though we didn't speak each other's language we got the gist of which parts were original and which came later. Contains a large sarcophagus and nice statue.

this may well be a small chapel but the setting doesn't look like it has changed for a long time and the knowledge of the guy on the door made my visit that little bit more special. and for those who decide to walk it's...More

Agree with other reviewers that this is a worthwhile diversion, and that the caretaker made it extra special. I thought we passed through a warp in time as we entered the narrow country lane and encountered a rider on horseback. It is utterly peaceful around...More

The oldest sanctuary in Portugal (7th c). Off the beaten path, but worth the effort to find it. Lovingly cared for. The woman who let us in spoke little English but worked so hard to help us understand. Thank you.

The drive to this chapel isn't for the faint of heart- the country road is winding and narrow and I'm relieved we didn't have to make room for any oncoming cars. Once we arrived, I didn't know what to expect, but upon stepping inside, I...More

God.......We made it there. Nice one and still kept well in condition. The path to the chapel is somewhat harsh but glad we did make it.

This is a small archaic Visigoth and Arab chapel in an incredible setting well worth the visit, just 10 minutes from central town Lamego. The guide is very helpful and will give a tour of the site.

If you are into medieval art this chapel provides a well preserved example of the era's changing art style. There is a rare medieval statue of a pregnant virgin Mary, the alter is beautifully carved wood, on the ceiling are well preserved portraits of saints,...More

This small chapel is located on the outside of the city of “Lamego”. Do not be afraid because you will have to drive on small rural roads to arrive on the chapel who seems to be in the middle of nowhere in the valley. When...More

A beautiful little church that keeps on going after so many centuries, nestled by the banks of the Baselmao river, lost in the Douro countryside. The road is enchanting is sometimes a little narrow for us city types, but it is a treasure worth discovering...More
