This is a pilgrimage site to the Distinguished Relic of São Torcato. It is a very peaceful place and a good way to spend a little time re-charging...The building is beautiful and and the area around is too. It is easy to access and to park. Nearby there is the famous historical castle which is a must to visit so you can consider a visit to both!

The SãoTorcato Sanctuary is a Catholic sanctuary located in the central valley of the parish of São Torcato (Guimarães), where the village develops around it.
The temple with classic, gothic, Renaissance and romantic elements, is all built in granite stone from the region, being a masterpiece of the neo Manuelino, whose construction began in 1871 and extends until the nowadays. The eclectic taste, arises within the context of the time, with predominance of neo-Romanesque decorative elements. It has considerable dimensions.
The façade consists of two towers and a central body. In plan, the temple has the typical form of the Latin cross. Inside the Church is the incorrupt body of SãoTorcato himself.
Outside the Sanctuary there is a patio which has, in front of the Sanctuary, a park adorned with leafy foliage and plantains. To access this park (popularly known as Monastery Park), a huge staircase is used, which connects to the temple. In the park we can also find two band stand, as well as two large water fountains.

I wouldn´t say that this is a must in your visit to Guimarães, especially if you are short of time, but this place has its own charm too. The first thing to know is that it´s located in the outskirts of the city, not very far but I guess it might be six or seven kilometres from the centre. When approaching the place by car, if you look at the temple from a distance, it looks quite picturesque, surrounded by green mountains. Once you get there, you´ll notice that it follows the neo-something style so widely followed in the XIXth century. Indoors everything is vast and silent. There´s a sense of monumentality all over the place.. They keep the saint´s body in a very ornated urn as an attraction element for worshippers.

We never went in, but the grand entrance across the streets with zig zagging hedge rows leading up to it are pretty excellent.
