The name of the square translates as "bull square". The fair of bulls and other large cattle known since the XVII century gave the name of the square. The fortress wall was located here earlier. A fragment of the wall with the inscription "Aqui nasceu Portugal" (Portugal was born here) is the visual dominant of the square. It's a metaphor. In what sense was Portugal born here? The first king Afonso Henriques was born in Guimaraes, not the country itself. Other landmarks are the fountain and the Church of San Pedro. Four star EMAJ Boutique Hotel is located opposite.

We walked down the hill from the train station in search of the center of town and we found it here! And then we found an excellent restaurant on the Largo for our lunch. And then we found our way to the old town just off this big square. We came back here to use the taxi stand to take a taxi back to the train station.

The center square of Guimarães is Largo do Toural. Recently remodeled, is the best spot to start to visit most points of interest. Walking time to the castle and to the main historical streets.

The Toural Square has been known for centuries as the heart of Guimarães! It is where the city cattle fair happened and the population gathered to do their shopping, gossip and get the news. Totally restored, the Square is still there and keeps much of the old atmosphere. Beautiful constructions surround the Square. Exquisite and traditional Portuguese tiles can be seen in many buildings and façades. Take your time and visit the Square, bring a book, sit by the fountain and enjoy the soul of Guimarães. Cafés and restaurants are spread along, keeping the taste of the magic and unforgettable Portuguese cuisine. Enjoy!

This could be a great Plaza if it there was no traffic.
Such a small city and the cars seems to rule the place as they are everywhere ...

Main square of the city that is remembered for the inscription "Aqui nasceu Portugal" (here Portugal was born) reported on one of the palaces. You can also see many colorful buildings that are a sunny day can light up the entire square.

There are many fine and grand buildings flanking this large and historic square, however a busy road runs run through it, and there is an absence of the outside cafes, bars and restaurants that are prevalent in the medieval town squares. The medieval town is just behind one of the sides of the square through Rua Dr Avelino Germano

This was the cattle market back in the day! Definitely the most elegant one of those you'll eversee!
These days it is a big, open square with beautiful buildings all around it, perhaps the nicest and grandest being the Basilica San Pedo which is well worth calling into.

It is a nice square with a fountain and several other attractions. It is very near the wall with the inscription "Aqui nasceu Portugal", so you can't really miss it.

Whereas this square is arguably the heart of the modern city, and is used for communal celebrations etc., it doesn’t have the beauty and intimacy of the smaller squares in the old part of Guimaraes.
