There are many squares and streets more interesting in Historic Center, but everybody looks for Largo do Toural to take a photo in the wall, where is written "Aqui nasceu Portugal".

There are many fine and grand buildings flanking this large and historic square, however a busy road runs run through it, and there is an absence of the outside cafes, bars and restaurants that are prevalent in the medieval town squares. The medieval town is just behind one of the sides of the square through Rua Dr Avelino Germano

The name of the square translates as "bull square". The fair of bulls and other large cattle known since the XVII century gave the name of the square. The fortress wall was located here earlier. A fragment of the wall with the inscription "Aqui nasceu Portugal" (Portugal was born here) is the visual dominant of the square. It's a metaphor. In what sense was Portugal born here? The first king Afonso Henriques was born in Guimaraes, not the country itself. Other landmarks are the fountain and the Church of San Pedro. Four star EMAJ Boutique Hotel is located opposite.

Main square of the city that is remembered for the inscription "Aqui nasceu Portugal" (here Portugal was born) reported on one of the palaces. You can also see many colorful buildings that are a sunny day can light up the entire square.

This was the cattle market back in the day! Definitely the most elegant one of those you'll eversee!
These days it is a big, open square with beautiful buildings all around it, perhaps the nicest and grandest being the Basilica San Pedo which is well worth calling into.

The square is quite beautiful because it's surrounded by old buildings and the fountain in the middle of it gives it quite a lovely look, but during christmas this place is magical. So many lights everywhere makes you feel you're in a proper Christmas town. My wife completely loved it.

Apart from the historic importance this square has played in the past there's a special beauty about it. A meaningful sculpture " Art will try to fix you" has been recently "planted" in one of its corners using discarded wheelchairs and other objects associated and/or used by people with mobility disabilities that almost inevitably draws people's attention.

Close to the wall stating that Portugal began here, a nice square lively and mixing modern shops and old houses.

This is a large square, with a huge fountain in it, it served as a cattle market in the 18th century. There are plenty of sun shades around the square

Largo do Toural is a rather large public square. It has a really lovely fountain, but practically no trees or greenery except on either end a few small trees. This is probably typical of many European squares. However there are many shops on either side of it, including cafes and restaurants, where you can sit, have something to eat or drink, relax and watch the world go by. You can also admire the beautiful architecture which is spread right around, featured in all the wonderful buildings surrounding Largo do Toural. Worth a visit.
