This fabulous Baroque church draws half its appeal from an organic ensemble with a geometrically laid out garden on Largo do Brasil. The Church of Our Lady of Consolation and the Holy Steps has the middle name San Gualter in honor of a Franciscan monk, a local saint. The church itself began to be built at the beginning of the XVIII century on the site of a chapel of the sixteenth century. Architect Andres Soares completed the construction of the church in 1785 in the then fashionable Baroque style. Two flanking bell towers, built in the middle of the XIX century by an architect from Porto, complete the fabulous image of San Gualter. The staircase balustrade and altar of the main chapel date from the late 18th century. The interior is designed in an impressive neoclassical style.

It was the exterior of this beautiful Baroque church that really caught my eye from the manicured gardens of Largo República do Brasil. Two slender bell towers flank a façade lined with blue-and-white azulejo tiles. Sadly, the church was closed when I visited, and I didn’t get to see the interior.

Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Consolacao e Santos Passos is a nice church. Its history goes back quite a long way, as far back as 1576. It's undergone a few additions and other renovations since, but it still maintains its beauty. The interior is also lovely but not as elaborate as other churches. What makes its setting so fantastic, however, is the green expanse right in front of the church. This is the public gardens, Largo Republica do Brasil, which is an absolutely stunning green space that seems to go on forever! It's a truly magnificent sight. Highly recommended.

it is not easy to maintain such a huge number of plants and additionally make a small garden in the middle of the town... despite the traffic jam in this place, the passageway to Nossa Senhora da Consolacao goes deep...

Its official name is "Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Consolação e Santos Passos", but it is more commonly known as "Igreja de São Guálter". It is located at the end of the beautiful and manicured gardens of "Largo República do Brasil", at a square called "Largo de São Guálter. As you may not know, St. Gualter was a franciscan monk sent by St. Francis of Assisi himself to Portugal, in the year of 1217! His has been later named patron of Guimarães and this church, in the neo-baroque style was built around the 18th and 19 Centuries. Pay attention to the beautiful tall and slim towers. Awesome! And one last remark: every year, during the month of August, Guimarães celebrates its patron, with the so called "Festas Gualterianas", a real local tradition! Enjoy!

Not a great Gothic cathedral. But interesting anyway with a front covered with azulejos, which is rare. The garden in front is beautiful

Visited the church as we went towards the cable car up the mountain. One of the weird bits of this church is the obvious human mummified remains dressed as a Roman in the church. No information around on order to understand this (probably remains of saint...). Very purple interior quite unusual to see as well.

The church is very nice and great attraction on its own, but the grounds that stretch for several blocks leading up to the entrance of the church is what makes this such a great place to visit. The gardens are exquisitely maintained and make for a unique experience. If you only have limited time and can't spend much time here, you definitely have to take a few minutes to see the exterior and the landscaping - even without entering the cathedral.

We came across this church and the gardens as we walked from the Cable Car to the main centre of Guimarães.
The church sits majestically at one end of a large square that has fantastic symmetrical gardens that lead all the way up to the edge of the Centro Histórico de Guimarães.
It would be easy to miss this view if you didn't know it was there, but I would recommend a brief visit to admire the scenery.
