We were in Guimares for only a few hours but in that time we were able to detect more than a bit of civic pride in the way all the buidings in the town centre were very well maintained.

This impressive baroque building, easily seen on your way back to town after visiting the Palace of the Dukes and the Castle of Guimarães, will catch your eyes and curiosity. It is the former Convent of St. Clare ("Convento de Santa Clara de Guimarães", in the Portuguese language), built back in 1548 and occupied by the nuns between 1562 and 1891 (when the last surviving nun died). In 1968 it was designated as the City Hall of Guimarães, housing also the municipal archives. The entrance is free on working hours and you will certainly enjoy visiting it. Check the cloisters, perfectly kept, and the beautiful statue of St. Clare, just above the main door, almost inlaid in the baroque façade. Enjoy!

Beautifully maintained structure that now houses police headquarters but the highlight was we saw the changing of shifts with the local policia in formation in front of the Hdqtrs.! The building is located on the quaint, narrow, cobblestoned Rua Santa Maria. Worth a visit.

This is a very attractive building in the old city. We noted it right away and stopped to take a photo as it is in such good condition and catches the eye.

Entry is free, so step into the cloisters of this former monastery. Although they are not exceptional on merit, the contrast from the working city hall behind the door will be noticeable.

Camara Municipal de Guimaraes is a really beautiful building. The outside is quite stunning architecturally and aesthetically. We only had a very quick look inside as we could not enter at the time and it looked rather nice. It is in a nice area, higher ground and it stands out from a distance. Worth a visit if you can go inside.

Building is monumental; there are benches in front of it under trees; you can rest there. The fountain is a nice spot to take picture

The City Hall is located at Largo Cónego José Maria Gomes. The building dates to the 16th century and use to be the Santa Clara Convent, one of the richest in the town. The building has a Baroque façade with two stories. There is a statue of St. Clare. What used to be the chapel now has the Alfredo Pimenta Municipal Archives, which hold the important local documents.

After visiting the palace and castle, I headed towards the town hall and Santa Maria Street. The town hall building turned out to be more impressive than I expected. The front facade requires no comment, it is simply beautiful. The quiet square around the town hall harmonizes with the building itself. I did not find out how old the building is, but it looks very worthy. It is a suitable place for municipal authorities and the city can be proud of the seat of its authorities.
