Legends are always legends and sometimes, or many many years later, it is quite impossible to check if these legends really happened. We better believe and enjoy these magic stories. So, as the legend says, at this humble chapel, D. Afonso Henriques, the founder and first King of Portugal, was baptized. The "original" baptismal fountain still can be seen inside the chapel. Legend or not, the Church of St. Michael of the Castle (the oficial name of the chapel) was built around the 13th Century, in the late romanic style, at the so called Sacred Hill ("Colina Sagrada", in the Portuguese language) in Guimarães. It became ruins until the 19th Century, when restoration efforts brought it to the actual looks. The Chapel, together with the neighboring Castle of Guimarães and the Palace of the Dukes of Bragança, form a complex of great historical and architectural importance. Well, it is simple, humble and almost empty, but carries so much history that a visit is a must. Enjoy!.

Our tour did take us inside of the small, very simple little chapel, where it is believed that the first king of Portugal, Alfonso Henriques, was baptized. The floor is covered with the funerary slabs of those who were buried there (well-worn by time).

You can’t help but see this small, simple Romanesque church that sits between the castle and palace. Consecrated in 1239, it is dedicated to Saint Michael. Legend says that inside is the baptismal font where Afonso I, the first king of Portugal, was baptized (he was born next door in the castle). The floor of the church is covered with funerary slabs for those buried under the church. Perhaps knights that died protecting the castle? Another fascinating piece of Portugal history!

This is a small, but royal, church belonged to the nearby castle. It is a very nice Romanesque style church, quite small, and quite dark. Not that much to see inside, but the floor is covered with tombstones, and it has a very nice atmosphere (if not too many tourists are inside).

Laying between the Braganza Castle and Medieval castle you will find this little chapel. Very charming is the baptistery pot.

This is a small chapel near the castle walls. It is worth a brief look as it is historic and has a lovely setting in a park.

This little chapel is so charming. It is down below the castle and works well with it to create a whole landscape of loveliness. Inside is stark but noble. Come and take a photo like we did.

This is a very old church. There’s almost nothing inside it. But it’s supposed to be considered a royal church as the 1st king of Portugal had some dealings with this particular church.

Rahter Asian-style - take a picture, venture inside and then move on. Still, spend some time inside, the floorstones are very interesting to explore.
