About
At Alberto Sampaio Museum everything combines to leave the visitor wanting to return here. We get thrilled without knowing why. What is certain is that visitors feel serenity and left enchanted by the beauty of the set. This is the only national museum that opens its doors during the night, in the months of July and August. Visit this "museum at night" is an experience you will never forget. This museum certainly deserves, "all visits and visitors makes swears to come back here every time we're in Guimaraes" (Jose Saramago). Want to try?

We paid the 2E extra to get a combo ticket for this, the castle & Braganca. We did not feel this was worth it as we are not interested in religious art. The items were poorly presented.

Come here only if you are interested in religious art and paintings & have an extra hour to spare. But walking around Guimaraes is a better use of your time.

I would skip this museum.

My husband and I were walking around the town and was just about to walk past this museum but they had a big banner on the outside saying it was a contemporary art museum which both my husband and I are very much interested in. There was quite an un interested man on the till as we entered who took the entrance fee. The museum/ art gallery is attached to the very old church. We walked into the cloisters where there were a few exhibits of extremely low quality art. We were so disappointed. Apart from these few pieces the remaining exhibits were of a very religious nature and although extremely old and if you like that sort of think fare enough but from the outside it was not evident that this was what the place was about. We would never have gone into the museum. We felt as if we were conned into going in. We both also feel that displaying poor quality contemporary pieces give this genre of art a bad name.

A most beautiful museum in a lovely location and my favourite from our trip to north Portugal. The curator seems to have selected the best of each kind of item - everything here earned its place and is given space to breathe so you can se it properly. You will see tiled panels, carved and painted wood and stone figures, paintings and textiles. The famous gambeson of King Dom JoĂ£o 1 is a National Treasure.

Keep you eyes open to spot this wonderful museum and once inside keep looking as there are different floors and areas to find.
From the outside this looks very small but you ned to walk through the courtyard and follow a guide or get directions as there are three very different areas and there are two floors in some cases. There is also pottery on the edges of the courtyard.
Ideal for people of all ages but we saw no alternative to the stairs so not suitable for those with mobility problems. There is a small gift shop at the front main entrance and the exit was through the courtyard which was used as a small market the day we were there.

I liked the size. This was not a big museum. The old house and the small garden was so nice and the collections were fantastic.

This museum contains probably one of the most precious artifacts of Portuguese history.: the gown that King Joao I used in 1385 during the legendary battle of Aljubarrota. Besides this, the museum contains many other important artifacts and paintings, many of religious nature, that makes this probably one of the most important museums in Portugal.

This relatively small museum was fascinating to visit. It wraps around the church walls of Our Lady of the Olive Tree in the historic core of the city. It has a wonderful collection of ecclesiastical art which was so appropriate considering the location and cloistered Romanesque setting.

The museum is very interesting and well worth the trip. It is free a lovely place to visit. Check the days and hours that it is open as it was closed a couple of days when we were there.

The museum has some very beautiful medieval collections.
The museum is next to a church and has several resistance pieces - sacrophages, religious pieces, etc.
The museum is worth visiting

This is a small but terrific place to visit. The old cloister is one of the most peaceful spots ever. On a rainy day, it was even more beautiful. The collections are not vast, but there is some simply amazing religious artwork included. It was our favorite place in Guimaraes.
