This exquisite church forms the third part of the main historical attractions in old Guimaraes -- the first two are the palace and castle.
The richness and excess of old Portugal are on continual display. Looking up and down, front and back, everything is pretty awesome yet reverent.

Any tour of Portugal will inevitably include a visit to at least one of the countless churches found throughout the city. Before you reach your fill be sure to see this particular church while in Guimaraes. The late 14th century building has an interesting blend of architecture and the well-preserved interior will immediately transport you back hundreds of years. I never cease to be impressed and amazed by the abilities of the builders to erect such an edifice without the aid of modern construction equipment and engineering discoveries. This is definitely a church not to be missed.

The main altar and tiles were stunning. And no one was there, as they are in some churches, making sure you didn't take pictures.
We were able to take pictures, and we keep enjoying the beauty that way now that we are back home. This is definitely one of the more beautiful churches in Portugal that we have seen.

Such discrete exteriors contrast the luxurious interiors of gold and traditional blue tiles. It is amazing and should never be missed in a visit to Guimaraes.

Please note, it may only be open for a few hours in the afternoon.

The Church of Sao Gonçalo is the main monument of Amarante and one of the most beautiful churches in Portugal. Apart from that, it is located in the heart of town, next to the Roman bridge (rebuilt) and in a place that marks one of the main battles between the Napoleonic troops against the allied Portuguese/Britain troops. The view is amazing and one can enjoy a delicious meal is the neighbour restaurant. The Museum Amadeo de Souza Cardoso is <100 m away.
Special tip: Sao Gonçalo is considered a matchmaker and many single women are known to visit the church to ask him for a boyfriend ;-)

From outside nobody can imagine how sumptuous is the church of São Francisco at Guimarães. The magnificent main chapel and side altars all covered in gold make this religious building one of the most outstanding in northern Portugal. The sacristy is something really out of this world if one considers its artistic heritage.

Amazing church, so nice and imponent that you feel it is really a God's house. We saw an exibithion of a classical string quartet and 2 opera singers in this church, will never forget it. Acoustic conditions are perfect in a church built 14th century.

The Franciscan Order in Guimarães dates to the 1200s. The church we see today is an 18th century restoration of a Gothic church built on medieval ruins. From the outside, the church is plain and stark. But be prepared for a surprise when you walk through the entrance! Elaborate gilded carvings, azulejos with scenes from the life of Saint Anthony, elegant arches and a painted trompe d'oeil ceiling add up to a stunning interior. The church may be small but it packs a big punch! It appeared they might have been preparing for a wedding or some other ceremony, so I didn’t linger.

Church is open daily but closes for lunch..we had to come back. Stunning interior with giltwork and azulejos. We were able to get a side tour to the sacristy with an available guide.

It is a short walk from town center and well worth an hour of your time.

I went in this church the day I was leaving Guimaraes. When I entered this very elaborate church, I just could not believe my eyes, I thought I had seen all types of churches. It's difficult to explain what is worth seeing in this church, and I am sure that if you want to see everything you have to spend hours in here. In a couple of hours I went in this church 3 times as we were leaving Guimaraes in the evening. Each visit we discovered beautiful areas, and was sorry that we had to go and catch the bus to the airport.
