It is said that this is place where used to be an olive tree that got cut down and to commemorate it, they built this structure. It is located in the center of the town right next to the church on the main square. Definitely, a must visit if you're in Guimarães and it is a free attraction.

A stunner of a square, thr nicest in the whole old town although the Sao Tiago right next door through the arches runs it close!
The beguiling Padrao Do Salado draws the eye, a lovely monument to those who died in the 14th century battle of Solado against Muslim forces. It has a big cross inside a gothic style portico.
Behind it the Oliveira Church is a masterpiece. Its wonderfully intricate inside and out, such a peaceful place with beautiful stonework and sunshine pouring in the windows.
All atound the Square there are restaurants with outdoor seating. It's a wonderful atmospheric area, one of my favourite places in Guimaraes.
Dobt miss the old town hall at the far end from the Padrao, the one with the arches and the reddish hue.

It is not the largest square in the city, but it is its heart. There is a collegiate church next to it, and in front of the collegiate church there is a unique Gothic chapel of Padrao de Salado. Next to the collegiate church is the wonderful Alberto Sampaio Museum. I didn't have time to visit it, but even a glance at the cloisters surrounded by beautiful greenery gave me some satisfaction. There is also a characteristic building of the old town hall. On the square itself, there are tables set up in numerous catering establishments, and social life is almost constant here. It is also a meeting place and a "contact" point. A must-see.

We stayed at at a nearby hotel, Hotel de Oliveira. So we went through this nice square several times a day. It is quite picturesque and there is this mysterious structure with arches right close to the Church. Several restaurants in the square though we did not get to try any.

Largo da Oliveira is a lovely public area. It is a wonderful spot to spend some time just walking around and looking at all the amazing things this place has to offer - great culture, architecture, history, friendly people, cafes and restaurants and much more. Very peaceful and enjoyable.

I must say that I despair at previous reviews that suggest that an ancient square (and I assume the rest of the historic area) are somehow “weirdly out of place in the hustle and bustle of the city centre”. It’s called history - and there’s lots of in in Europe.

This fabulous square is one of the two adjoining main squares in the old town. It contains a splendid church and has many other impressive and attractive buildings. As one would expect it also contains plenty of cafes and restaurants and is a major part of the city’s social scene.

A must visit area if you are in Guimaraes.

The story of St. James is played out in part in this quaint town. A must-see if you stop here! The whole town was worth a look!

Oliveira Square, or simply "Largo da Oliveira" in the Portuguese language, is one of the main squares at the Historical Center of Guimarães: a site recognized by Unesco as a World Heritage. I don't need to say much more! It is beautiful and surrounded by a group of valuable historical constructions. Stroll lazily around the Square, visit the Church of Our Lady of the Oliveira ("Oliveira" means the olive tree), enjoy the traditional residences with their balconies and beautiful wooden doors and windows and make a few photos at the gothic monument of "Padrão do Salado". All dating from the 17th Century! And one last remark: sit on one of the many cafés, taste the Port Wine and just relax. Life is beautiful and at Guimarães it is simply divine. Enjoy!

We parked for free outside the old city and walked inside the walls. Inside it would be hard to find parking, it is free, but it is all taken. We had people guiding us all along...the people are kind.
It was very hot in August, but younger people did not mind it at all. Every Square has something interesting to see, and a city tour would explain the historic value of different buildings and so on.
At night, all squares lit up with the lights of every window...
