Beautifully preserved medieval centre
Aug 2020
The centre of Guimaraes has been beautifully preserved and it has deservedly been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2001. It has also been a European Capital of Culture. We stayed 2 nights close to the castle and we could have stayed at least another night. It is great to wander through the warren of little lanes, coming across picturesque little plazas or larger squares, both line with buildings dating back to the 14th century. Many of the plazas are filled with cafes. It is a shame that I seem to have lost the many pictures that I took. We will go back to stay sometime, however not in July or August, but in October when it is cooler, and after a visit to Braga where we have never been. One could spend between 2 to 4 hours here, perhaps spread over 2 days.

You're gonna fall in love with this city
Aug 2019
It’s a historic center declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You will find lively squares and features of Portuguese culture, streets full of Gothic palaces with colorful facades and a wide variety of European architectural styles. You’re gonna fall in love immediately with this city.

The first capital of Portugal

Very lovely cute small city. It seems that time goes here with its own pace. Small cafes, shops, gardens with flowers, old buildings and churches.

We were here just before the virus hit, so it was quiet.

Lots of little cafes dotted around and well planted gardens leading down to the church...a delight to walk around the narrow streets leading up to the castle.

Beautiful old historical centre

On a cool but sunny winters day we strolled the streets and squares of Guimaraes. A great day trip from Porto only 1 hour by train.

Absolutely Gorgeous
Feb 2020 • Solo
An absolute joy to wander the streets and lanes and enchanting squares of the historic old town quarter in Guimaraes. The walls give it the charm of being enclosed from modernity and there ate some stunning churches dotted about. Large D'Olibeira and the adjacent Placa Sao Tiago were the highlights I guess but getting pleasantly lost on the calm, quiet elegance of the cobbled streets was just absorbing. Loads of great places to eat and drink, some lovely craft shops and beautiful statuary.
One of the nicest places I've been to.

Modern Medieval Town
Feb 2020
However crazy it may sound, this is a modern town set in a medieval background. We really enjoyed our walk through the cobbled streets from the City Center to the Largo de Olieira

A hidden jewel
Jan 2020
I had not heard of Guimaraes before. It is not really a well known place. At least not yet. I was really happy to discover this beautiful City. The Old Town is picturesque and charming and as another reviewer mentionned, one should stay overnight to get a good feel of the place, both by day and by night.

Touring tips
Oct 2019
Stay overnight - you won’t get a feel for the town unless you do. Tourists come by 10am & leave by 5pm. After that you will be with the locals. We absolutely loved the feel of the town after the tourists departed for the day.

We stayed here three nights & went to Braga by bus one day. That was just the right amount of town as we took the train up from Coimbra.

We loved walking around the historic center & then branching out around it.
Porto was mobbed with tourists but Guimaraes did not which led to our enjoyment.

We really loved this town & were so glad we went. We highly recommend getting to see a real working town without the mobs of tourists.

The train from Porto takes about 1.25 hours & it’s a local making many stops. There is no express train other than the expensive long-distance AP train. Skip that train & take the local train as it’s much cheaper although a bit slower due to all the stops.

We sat near a local Mom & her daughter from Guimaraes on the local train who gave us lots of helpful tourist information which we greatly appreciated. We would not have gotten this information unless we had been on the local train & had a chance to meet locals.
