It really is a beautiful city with many old buildings and streets to see. We visited in January and although it was fairly mild , there weren't the outdoor cafes you would get in warmer weather. We went to the tourist office and from the summer photos it looks to be wonderful in the summer months. We visited the convent... More

Amazing city that shows where Portugal started. You can walk on the streets and see the better that Portugal has:Churchs, gardens, streets, museums, cafés and shops. The atractions are near from each other, but you have to Walk hard because it has Staps and difference of level bethween the streets. Enjoy-it!

The best thing about the historical center is that you can get so much history in a relatively small area! Cute streets that transport you right back to the past! Very pleasant tour!

It was interesting learning the founding of Portugal happened here. Our guide provided us the background information. The center is very beautiful and should be walked. This was the first capital of the country and worth a visit.

If you are in Guimaraes you cannot miss the historical square. It's small and easy no walk along and very much worth a visit. From here you can easily walk to the castle or the lookout.

We went for a day by train from Porto. The journey takes about a hour from San Bento station and it cost us pensioners about Euros 7 for both of us. Money well spent because the historic centre is so much better than even the guide books describe it as, It is not just the many attractive buildings, but the... More

Beautiful historic centre, lovely buildings, squares and streets, just lovely to wander around, have a coffee or lunch. Fantastic shops too, pricey but good quality.

Marvellous architecture very reasonably priced restaurants all in all a good place for a day trip. We had a cheese tapas selection sitting in one of the squares. Go in the churches as they are very atmospheric and don't miss the castle

We were staying in Porto and the tourist office recommended a visit to Guimaraes. It's a lovely historic city with plenty of restaurants for lunch. We caught train from S Bento station which took about 1 hour 20 minutes.Easy to find your way around and we didn't need a guide.Tour companies offer day trips to here and Braga which are quite...
