The historic centre is a lovely place just to stroll round. The medieval buildings are so beautiful. What is nice is to see the washing hanging out showing that real people still love here, this is not just a picture postcard. Highly recommend visiting the castle, palace and churches.

The city of Guimarães is well worth the visit. It's old town was quite a surprise, I did not expect it to be interesting, but it has a lot of places to take pictures and nice shops and restaurants.

Besides being small, it's very nice and clean. The traditional buildings (houses, churches, etc) are well taked care off.

The history here is just breathtaking. Almost one thousand years worth. Beautiful buildings and a beautiful castle. The birthplace of the first king of Portugal. To see where he was baptized, where he lived. It is quite emotional if you have Portuguese roots and even if you're just interested in European history in general.

Worth spending time just wandering around as some fascinating buildings and streets. Look out for the tiles on the outside of some buildings.

As you come down the hill from the Palace of the Duchess of Braga a you enter the historic centre. We visited on 8/9/16. There are quaint buildings as you walk through it wasn't heaving with people but there are a couple of nice squares where you can sit quietly also just down the road from the tourist information office...
