Beautiful Guimaraes

Guimaraes is an old beautiful city. The center of the city is small, so it's easy to walk around. The kids liked the visit in the fortress.

We very much enjoyed taking in the old town. On a weekend, at night, the whole area is very lively with many open squares and often some forms of entertainment. Great experience.

The historical centre is very well preserved in the downtown area. Nice to walk around. The city is a historical landmark for the nation.

The historic center of Guimaraes is one of the best preserved medieval towns I have encountered in my (extensive) travels. Narrow, cobblestone lanes, stone buildings, colonnaded walkways, open courtyards and plazas/squares help make walking through this ancient town a magical step back in time. Be sure to explore the historic center BOTH during the daytime and at night.

It was like a festival as Portugal was playing with Wales for the semifinal football match in Europe 2016. Everywhere was so full of fun and happiness under a perfect sunny sky and a pleasant evening. Do not miss visiting the Castle and the Palace of Afonso Henrique , the founder of the Kingdom of Portugal.

Guimaraes is one of the most historic cities in Portugal, where the country was proclaimed 900 years ago. It is now a World Heritage-listed site, and for good reason: it boasts an ancient castle, a palace, museums, and some beautifully preserved medieval squares linked by dog-legged, cobblestoned laneways. The city oozes character and charm. All the sights are within easy... More

Really recommend the historic center. The Guimarães center has lots of history, the people are nice and helpful but do forget to bring a coat for the night as the nights are way colder than the days.

The old town of Guimaraes is one of the prettiest in Europe. It's very compact, so easy to walk around and there seem to innumerable bars and restaurants everywhere.
