We were staying for a week in Porto and one day we decided to visit Guimaraes which we had read about when planning our holiday. In the event it proved to easy to get to by the efficient and inexpensive rail network radiating out from Porto. I think that the train to Guimaraes took just over one hour and it was great to look out of the window and see the countryside.

In arriving at Guimaraes station it was a short walk downhill into the centre of town. After all the crowds and bustle in Porto it was refreshing to visit a much quieter town where life seemed to progress at a slower pace. The town centre is well worth visiting with its range of impressive buildings, shops and places to eat.

Very glad we made this side trip to the "birthplace of Portugal." It's a very much lived in city that retains the charm of its medieval roots. Compact historic center is completely walkable, multiple very good restaurants and lodgings that are most reasonably priced. Main attractions of the castle, ducal palace and museum can be seen in one day on a combo ticket for only 8E. Frankly, none individually will knock your socks off, but one gets a good overview of the origins of Portugal. The city itself is the main attraction. The gondola ride to the top of an adjacent mountain is just outside the city center and very worth it. Beautiful views, great spot to have lunch at scenic restaurant, or picnic, or just have drinks/ ice cream. Walk down can be nice if your knees are up to it. Think we hit it at high season, as there were many tourists, heaviest with Portuguese, then Spanish. Didn't hear much English. They had a festa going our week, and looks like they schedule many over the summer. Hopping place for a small town -- really enjoyed it! Go!

While enjoying a relaxed driving tour across northern Portugal we spent three nights in the lovely city of Guimaraes. This was our first time here and found the place to be enchanting.

Like many old cities in Europe there is a distinct difference between the old and new parts. Most tourists will be drawn to the historic district with its castle, palace, charming squares and narrow, cobbled lanes. Indeed this was our favourite area as well.

The modern part of the city is also quite attractive however and has a clean and tidy look about it. There is a very good shopping centre, the Teleferic up the mountain and the expected plethora of churches, cafes and restaurants.

We certainly like Guimaraes as a whole and will certainly come back.

If you are in the region, this is a very walk able, non-touristy Medieval town. There are a few plazas and many restaurants in which to partake in a bit of lunch and some wine.

Guimaraes is a lovely city to visit. It is steeped in history. Everywhere you go there is something to see, something to admire. There is somewhere new to go and something new to taste. This is the birthplace of Portuguese nationality. This is where the first Portuguese King, Afonso Henriques, was said to have been born. Also in the 12th century, the King waged war against insurgent forces which he defeated, thus establishing himself as the undisputed leader of Portugal. The architecture in this city is beautiful and evident in every street you walk on. There are many wonderful cafes and restaurants where you can have a freshly cooked meal and have the drink of your choice. There are numerous, interesting and wonderful sights to visit and there are shopping areas to spend some of your shopping time too. And there is plenty more!
