This museum was so different to anything we had seen before. The costumes and masks were bizarre, some quite scary and relating back to ancient traditions and beliefs. Some were more modern but adopting the same styles as the old ones There were three floors and plenty of information as to the history and use of the costumes. Not to be missed if you are in Braganca which was an interesting town to visit with lots of museums,a castle and good restaurants.

Amazing, very condensed and easy to visit collection! if you have small kids that don't like masks, don't visit! if they do, this is a small space with lots of funny characters!!

We did not expect much but were pleasantly surprised, as the place is tastefully arranged and gives a good idea of this special aspect of local culture, which usually is not discussed. Even though it is only in Portuguese, it is quite easy to figure things out and see the interesting outfits and beautifully carved masks.

A small but beautiful museum showing the masks that are still used during carnival but mostly for winter solstice in villages in the northeastern part of Portugal and over the boarder in Spain (some looked scary but amazing). Some costumes are really incredible and detail the characteristics of each village, mixing pagan and christian beliefs. There are similar concepts of costumes around europe, such as with the Mamuthones in Sardinia or the Krampus in the eastern Alps.

Unmissable if you are interested in folklore, customs, traditional dress and costume. Three floors of well-displayed costumed figures and masks and a good display of photos and information about mask makers and those who make other items for traditional events.
