We went on the theatre tour and it was so interesting. We went on the stage, behind the stage, under the stage and above the stage in the flies. We also saw the dressing rooms and went onto the roof terrace. The tour lasted just over an hour and we had an excellent guide who explained the history of the theatre.
We made enquiries at the box office to find out when it was as it is just once a week. You need to be able to climb a lot of wooden steps so it is not suitable for anyone with mobility problems or for small children.

Did an extremely reasonably priced tour of this amazing theatre in the centre of Funchal. A theatre lover's must do! You are taken around every corner of this Theatre with the knowledgeable Guilherme who speaks impeccable English. 50 mins long and perfect in every way. Sadly, it only happens at 10am on. Monday. Just go......it's do worth it!!

We went on the theatre tour and it was very interesting. During the tour you are able to go on the stage, behind the stage, under the stage and above the stage in the flies. We were also able to see the dressing rooms and went onto the roof terrace which has great views of Funchal and the ocean. The tour lasted just over an hour and we had an excellent guide who explained the history of the theatre. You need to be able to climb a lot of wooden steps so it is not suitable for anyone with mobility problems or for small children. We hope to attend a show in the future if the timings work out. We can highly recommend this tour, especially at the bargain price they charge.

Booked for a classical concert on the last night of our holiday, all a bit last minute!!. Staff were superb, we even got a box with a great view. 20 Euros each...A bargain compared with the UK. All went smoothly, great concert, free programme, great views and a super experience...What a credit this theatre is to Funchal....Highly recommended !!!

Whenever we come to Funchal we immediately check for the concerts from Orchestra Classica da Madeira and book ahead for as many as possible during our stay.
There are usually guest conductors and soloists and the music is always wonderful.
On the evening of 13th January, the theatre was full, the orchestra in splendid form, the performance was thrilling and the entire experience was thrilling.
The selection of music was delightful and inspired.
The Italian conductor, Gianluca Marciano, is by far the best I have ever seen. He was a joy to watch and brought passion, energy and sheer talent.
The soloist on the bandoneon, Mario Stefani, was utterly exceptional. It is almost impossible to describe his passionate performance and how he lived every note.
I have never encountered the bandoneon before - it looks like a smaller version of the accordion. It was a beautiful instrument but I could not quite believe the quality and delicacy of the sounds this amazing musician managed to produce.
Both of these talented people on their own would be among the best in the world but together they took the music to a different
level. It was a privilege to be there and thank you, Teatro Municipal Balthazar Dias for a delightful, joyous evening.
Please will you arrange to get these musicians together again Funchal next January! That would be wonderful.

It's a beautiful building and a superb theatre inside. It was built in the 1800 I believe. We saw Mano Mano in concert which was very entertaining and enjoyable. The theatre is beautiful inside and well looked after. No ice cream intervals but a well stocked bar and restaurant and ice cream there. Toilets are clean. There are many boxes which in English theatres would fetch a premium but not here as views are not as good as floor seats. Good stage and helpful staff. Recommended place to visit and you must try to do a show or concert when in Madeira. It's a must and a highlight.

We managed, by the skin of our teeth, to get tickets for he concert at 9.30pm for the gala concert. It was a delight and a privilege to be in this wonderful theatre and the concert was magnificent. I loved every minute of it. Thanks for securing the tickets for us at the last moment. It was, as I say, the highlight of the whole trip.

It was a lovely to see the inside of the theatre but such an added bonus to be immersed in a night of wonderful music.

For a few years now, we have wanted to see the inside of this theatre. We were informed by a History Tours guide that it was much more affordable to take in a concert at the same time.

So, we checked the list. Some performances sounded great but were at the wrong time, for us. Some time that was right for us, had no presentations. However, the piano recital by Yuri Didenko came up aces.

Not only was the inside of the theatre a sight to behold but Mr. Didenko was brilliant. It was really 2 for 1.

So, I will pass on the same advice that if the time and performance fit for you, go for it. Just a note, they do not take credit cards.

I attended two concerts at this excellent theatre during my holiday this year. The first was local bands of Funchal, a bargain at only €3 and a very entertaining evening. Music, singing, flag twirling and a very athletic dance routine with tambourines by two young band members. The second concert was the Mandolin Orchestra, the first time I've had a chance to hear them and I was not disappointed. Great range of musical styles and two wonderful singers. I hope to catch them again on my next visit. And it's lovely to have seen so many young musicians over the two nights, Madeira has a large pool of musical talent for a small island.

This was my first visit to the theatre but it will not be my last. Beautiful interior, very well maintained and the seats were not only comfortable but gave a decent amount of leg room, something that is often lacking in modern theatres. The Madeiran Symphony Orchestra were very good, with an inspiring cello soloist and an animated conductor. A very enjoyable evening and well worth €20. Nice to see a some young children in the audience as well as a mix of adult locals and visitors.
