These small gardens are right in the centre of town.
Our apartment overlooked the park so we saw it every day at various times and walked through it many times. There are a variety of plants and trees from around the world and many benches to sit on and watch the world go by. There is a duck pond and a fountain as well.
There is a outdoor cafe in one corner selling various drinks and snacks which I used a couple of times. I paid 2 euros for coffee.
The park is well kept and I saw gardeners and cleaners there every day keeping it tidy.
The only downside is that there are a number of homeless men sleeping/living there and they can be quite loud at times when they argue with each other. Although I never saw them hassle any other visitors to the park I never went in there at night even though its well lit. (Does any sensible person go into parks at night these days?)

The Gardens look like a peaceful place in the city, but with the Christmas decorations and music it seems even better. It is quite small but never seems crowded. Well worth a visit.

Municipal Gardens, a botanic park on the site of the former Monasteryof Sao Francisco.
Here flowers and plants both endemic and from all over the world, are cultivated in a 8.300 square meter park whose attractions also include a lake a stream, several statues and an open-air auditorium.
Very nice decorated for Christmas

In the middle of the town, adjacent to Blandy's Madeira. It is a small well kept garden. The water fountain wasn't running when we were there. There is a cafe at the top of the garden, where they serve nice coffee, drinks, sandwiches, ices etc.
You can actually stand in one spot and see trees from all thecontinents but the poles.
The explorers all stopped in Madeira and the naturalists aboard these ships planted a lot of trees from the new worlds they discovered here. hence the variety.

We thought these gardens beat the other paid ones "hands down". We started at the old stone bridge which in itself is a work of art. Then strolled the many paths that cross-crossed the gardens. This is a mature garden with plants of many varieties. We never knew it was there until late in the day so made a special trip back to see it and it was worth it.

We wandered through here as we were exploring the area, and were completely blown away by these gardens. The plants were beautiful, the whole area was incredibly well looked after, and as an added bonus we watched lots and lots of small lizards basking and scurrying around. Really lovely and well worth a wander.

My wife and myself are currently holidaying in Madeira and earlier today - as part of the Old Funchal Walking Tour - we visited the Municipal Gardens which are located in the Town Centre and, as such, hard to miss!
The popular Gardens are well maintained and contain plants (many exotic and not commonly seen) from all over the world. An added bonus is that every Friday there are many stalls to be found in the Gardens selling a range of interesting local products at reasonable prices.
A most interesting part of our Tour and a venue which all visitors should try to see - even for a short while - during the course of their stay on the Island.

Beautiful gardens and fountain. Nice little cafe in the centre, not expensive. Just nice to sit and relax and enjoy the surroundings. There are sometimes small market stalls selling locally produced crafts.

It is a small garden, full of trees and flowers that you will not miss during your walk to the city center. As every garden in Funchal, this one is also a well preserved, clean, with a lot of benches to sit and relax under the shade of the trees
