What an amazing day-long experience with e-Bike Madeira up in the mountains, high above Funchal and overlooking the other side of the island. Although we had planned the trip with our two adult children, sadly due to a sickness bug, they were unable to attend the trip so it was left to my wife and I (our kids are planning a return trip to Madeira just to go on this excursion following our account of the day!)

We set off from the base in a minibus, towing all the mountain e-bikes behind us, heading for one of the high-points of the island. By around 10:15am we had set off from the starting point at a bar in Camacha with our super-informative and friendly guide, Mario. This was a 'Level 1' tour and we are both delighted we were not on a Level 2 as we were at the very limits of our skills and daring, though we never felt in danger at any point. We had a great morning, mainly descending the mountain towards our lunch stop at a bar in Portela, with great views at every point. After our stop we continued downhill with some of the gradients as steep as 1 in 4. The power of these e-bikes and their ability to make light of the steep uphills was a joy. The thick tyres and amazing suspension made the journey - even on the toughest bumps and jumps - a near doddle. Recent rain meant some of the terrain was boggy and at the very top of the mountain, the early spring weather meant a very cold start but both issues gradually improved as we descended. This particular tour ended in Machico on the eastern side of the island (near the airport).

I would, without a doubt, recommend this trip for anyone who is able to ride a bike and up for a little challenge. I was concerned about cycling uphill but the fact these are incredibly powerful e-bikes meant that very little effort was required to pedal the bikes - either up- or downhill. Our guide, Mario, was very friendly and able to keep a multi-ability group together with ease.

Don't miss this tour!

I had two good rides with Mario, an initial level 1 ride and then a level 2 guided ride. The level 2 ride was a 5000 feet decent from just below the clouds to the sea on varied and challenging trails. The e-Bikes are capable (and a very good idea if doing any climbing although actually we did very little). They do give a very useful boost when you need to go from slow and tricky ground and clear a rise or obstacle. Fairly small groups and a knowledgeable and capable guide who also helped with lines in the tricky sections and encouraged but never pushed people to ride what they didn’t feel comfortable with. Well worth the €95 a trip. Recommendations, bring your cycling shoes, they have SPD and other clipped pedals available.

Tried to book with free ride but they couldn't accommodate a calheta pick up. That said wasn't dissapointed from the communications to the pick up and most ifd all the guide who tapered the tour to our skill set despite being a level 2 ride we got to ride some EWS trails. The guide was good at stopping before any features and pointing out the 'madeira ice' which had me down twice. Also the bikes were high quality but I'd recommend telling them if you want UK brake set up and also being your own pedals as the ones weren't great.
To conclude I'm glad I booked with ebike madeira as the value was superb and they couldn't have been more helpful despite Al ost Scottish conditions. 💧💧💧

An unforgettable experience with an incredibly knowledgable, enthusiastic and friendly guide. He made sure to ensure that the whole group were comfortable with the level of difficulty of the tour and tailored the trails to the ability of the group. He was also open to answer our questions and offer recommendations for things to do on the island once the trip was over. Couldn’t have asked for a better guide or a better day out. Thank you so much Nuno!

Great day out thanks to our lead Ross!! The day after the storm created some challenging conditions for us !! Plenty huge puddles, slimy rocks and roots, lots of debris and mud - what’s not to like 😂👍 the EBike MTB’s were brilliant for us and helped us for sure. A fully clothed shower on the beach at the end moved some of the mud!! We were called Batman and Monkeyman during the ride for reasons that stay between the 3 of us and the mountain!! Thanks again Ross- hopefully we can do it again some time 👍

Had a really exciting 4/5 hour tour lead by ebike staff which was just about within our capabilities. I wouldn't describe it suitable for beginners at all as you have to be quite confident in all terrains. Friendly staff but should have told us the parking was on a parking meter. Also should have told us to bring warm clothing, gloves and sandwiches and that the cafe is closed on a Tuesday. No toilets were available on our trip but maybe would have been if anyone asked. Fantastic route for seeing a wide variety of areas and vegetation. Very memorable.

We had a wonderful day tour with Nuno on excellent new bikes. After a drive up the mountain, Nuno assessed our level of competence ( or incompetence in my case) and adjusted the tour accordingly. We were very lucky with the weather and enjoyed a sunny lunch with great views and tea by the sea at the end of the day.
Nuno was a delightful and informative guide who looked after us well.
Highly recommended.

We did a day tour, originally due to be of the East of the island, but we made a unanimous decision to switch to both (a) easier on-track routes, due to our limited experience/risk appetite; and (b) awful weather in the East of the island. We therefore ended up exploring a range of levada walks (walking routes next to drainage channels), which worked out very well as we were off road, but on easy terrain, but also saw far more of the levadas than we would have been able to had we been just walking. Definitely worth doing, and the additional cost of paying for a guide is worth it as (a) they know where they're going; and (b) your support vehicle follows you during the day, in the hopefully unlikely event of an issue.

Pedro is an enthusiastic, experienced rider and correctly introduced our adult party of four to the real off road, mountain trails - mud and rock path early on to allow us and him to decide just how much off road suited this group. We voted to stick to more solid roads, but with plenty of twists turns, speed, and weather to consider.

The steep and fast descents for this author were terrifying as a first off roader experience. The rest of the party experienced the whole thing as a wonderful challenge not least because the showers made paths slippy and concentration was a must. Highly recommended but concentrate - concentrate - concentrate! Ha!

Very friendly company 😁 I emailed prior to my arrival in Funchal to enquire about hiring a bike for one day. Very prompt and helpful communication. They arranged to have a small sized Focus Cayo carbon road bike ready for me to collect, fitting the correct pedals and adjusting everything to suit me when I arrived. I took all my own gear with me and had a nice 40km ride around Funchal including a climb up to Eira do Serrado on a lovely sunny morning ☀️
